Tristen frowned at his reflection. There was always that one cowlick that just would not co-operate. After one last-ditch attempt at taming his hair, he ran a hand through it and returned it to its normal state. A moment passed and he looked at his cell phone. The friends he had asked to help with the horses would be leaving in an hour, so that Mai wouldn't know about them. It was time to go. The door was unlocked and Tristen let himself in. He slid out of his boots and then moved to sit on the bottom step of Mai's stairs. I'm here, Mai. So whenever you're ready. He pulled the box of sour gummi worms and pez out of his jacket pocket, then slid the CD he had made her underneath it. The bow stuck to the box of candy and he poked at it, he didn't think Mai was into bows and considered taking it off. When he tugged at it though, the colored cardboard under the sticker started to peel off and he left it alone. |

Staring in her bathroom mirror, tucked away from sight by the closed door, she took a barrette with fake jewels that matched her eyes, except a deeper shade of blue, and slide the stray piece of hair that wouldn't stay put into it, holding it down that way, since she didn't like hair gel or hair spray in excess amounts. Biting her lower lip, she took a deep breath then sighed. Opening the door, she began to descend the stairs. She'd lied earlier, though she hadn't meant to. She'd forgotten the dress that Kari had given her the year before. It was a faded blue, to the point it almost looked white, and it was simple, with only a bit of frills on the sleeves, and a faint pattern of ivy vines around the bottom, which was halfway between the ground and her knees. She stopped halfway down the stairs, glancing desperately out the window to make sure Kari wasn't peeking, but her sister had actually listened to her for once and gone home to her one room apartment for a movie marathon with her best friend for the night. In fact, she was probably stuffing her face with a handful of greasy popcorn, or drizzling extra melted butter over a bowl of said snack food. I forgot about this. I hope it's alright. She said, as she continued down, to sit on a stair a bit higher up, not noticing what he held in his hands, as her eyes still glanced ate windows every third second or so. She could've sworn Kari would've heard about this, since she was very good at getting people to spill their guts. She just wasn't convinced that Kari had kept her nose out of others' business for once. |

Standing and turning to look at Mai he wondered if she could look any better. He didn't think he could. It was like one of those scenes when an angel comes down the golden stairs with trumpets and voices singing hallelujah. Mai, you look like an angel. He forgot about the CD and candy and opened his mouth again. I think I might end up having to beat off every man we meet. It was cheesy and he knew it, but didn't really care; it was an actual possibility in his opinion. Not that the thought appealed to him, then their date would be ruined. Stop thinking like that or you're going to jinx it. he told himself. |

Mai smiled, her cheeks turning a rosy pink. I think I can manage that myself. May get us kicked out of wherever you planned to take me if I do it, though. You've been warned. She got back up, descending the rest of the stairs to stand in front of him, noticing the gift, and tipping her head to the side. It's not my birthday, you know. She told him, seeing a card that was attached to the box, underneath the bow, that read happy birthday. Of course, it was hard to see, let alone read, so it wasn't the card that made her say it, but the bow itself. |

He sighed and looked at the bow. I wondered whether to ditch this or not he admitted and I know its not your birthday. I would have gotten you something else if it were. As Tristen handed her the box he wondered whether she would be able to ride Angel in the dress. He didn't know if he should say something or not, finally he decided it wouldn't ruin the surprise if he simply told her to grab some=thing more suitable for later. It might be a good idea to pick something like jeans for later on. |

She slapped his hand, glaring at him slightly. First you say dress, then you say jeans. Geez. Make up your mind! Stuffing the gift back on his lap, she dashed up stairs, grabbed pair of jeans and a shirt that matched, stuffing them in a grocery bag. She was planning on leaving it in his truck anyway, so she figured it didn't matter. She returned down the stairs, then took the candy, opening it up to grab some. Sugar was always good, unless it was from a stalker. Then, and only then, was it considered bad in her mind. |

Yes, I'm being difficult. I'm not trying though. He smiled at her and started for the truck, holding the door open for her on the way. The drive wouldn't be too long, but it was a good idea to leave early anyway. It wasn't something he was used to, going to a fancy restaurant. Have I told you how nice you look? |

Well, its not my fault you look nice all the time. He teased. Breaking slightly as someone pulled out in front of them in case they didn't see him coming, Tristen cringed. His break pads were getting thinner than he liked. They weren't squealing yet but he had looked at them the other day. Autozone was a trip he usually avoided. He had a tendency to overspend at that store. I'm sorry if it smells like dog in here, I don't usually have human company. He fought the urge to sniff the air and laughed at himself. He should have thought about that earlier. |

Mai rolled her eyes. I don't really care, if you haven't noticed. Anyone who did would've pointed it out to you a while ago. Opening the window, she placed her elbow and lower arm on the door, where the window had been before she lowered it, and looked outside. Soooo.... Where are we going, anyway? |

We're going out to eat. He answered easily, despite the fact that he was tip toeing around the answer. She wasn't stupid, and he knew that. But he wasn't going to give her the whole truth unless flying pigs started divebombing him for the right answer. I think its also called going on a date. But I wouldn't call it that, Shiloh might get his little heart broke. Sarcasm seeped through his tone. He couldn't help but be jealous. Shiloh was always just a little bit closer to what Tristen wanted, and it bothered him sometimes. This time though, things were a little different and he tried to push the negative feelings away. Tonight was for him and Mai, and nothing was going to ruin it. |

Mai laughed, short and harsh. Who names their kid after a fake beagle, anyway? She commented, reaching up to brush a stray hair out of her face right before she had to close her eye to avoid the hair touching her eye itself. And you didn't answer my question. I asked where we were going, not what we were doing when we got there. |

Right. And you expected an answer? He wasn’t sure he could tell her if he wanted to. The name of the restaurant was in French. Of course he could say “The beach” but she didn’t know about that. Yet. Well we’re here now. Happy, babydoll? The engine cut off soundly when he turned the key. He lifted the E-brake just in case; he didn’t feel like finding his truck had rolled backwards when they came back out. A moment later Tristen was standing beside Mai’s door holding it open. |

Mai rolled her eyes, and was about to open her door herself when he opened it for her, pulling her out a bit because of her grip on the handle, and she had to grab onto him to keep herself from falling. This brought their faces quite close, and her's turned bright red in record time. She had frozen, eyes wide, unable to move without either falling farther forward, or getting sent off balance trying to tip back into the truck and having something happen. |

Mpf An arm snaked out in surprise as Mai started to tilt. The result was a lopsided hug, but Tristen wasn’t campaigning. Especially since his lips were already too busy to be doing any talking. |

What could be defined as a squeak came from her throat in surprise, but she found she couldn't resist, and ended up kissing him back for a moment, before she pushed back, falling backwards onto the armrest of her seat, and propelling Tristen back at least a step/. |

I was trying to stop you from falling… not actually knock you backward. He reached a hand out to her but kept his distance. I think we can go inside now. Still grinning like a kid locked in a pastry bakery and nearly dancing out of his shoes, he made his way to the entrance door with Mai in hand. |

Mai knew she was never going to live that down, so walked along beside him, obedient as a little child, with her eyes lowered to the ground, her cheeks still tinted pink. However, there was a small smile there as well. |

He pushed the door open and led Mai through. As his eyes adjusted to the dim lighting he saw a waitress coming to seat them. Do you have reservations? She asked politely. Under Mckenzie She spun around and grabbed two menues then headed towards the only empty table near a window. Tristen pulled out a chair for Mai and told th waitress they would be ready in a moment. |

Well, uh, I wasn't expecting it to be this fancy, but, uh, I guess it's okay... She was looking around nervously at first. Then, she saw a pair of business men, clearing meeting for something important, looking at her. And not in one of those 'Oh look at that nice dress. Now, what were we talking about?' ways, either. She narrowed her eyes at them, and, from the look on their faces, surprised them by doing so. They quickly ignored her again. And so, she looked through the menu. |
