There were three A-24 variants: A-24, A-24A, A-24B. So the first question is, what variant is reputedly in the box?

IIRC, none fo them are ver different from the equivalent model of SBD (they were all derived directly from Navy production). It's things like different tail wheels, removing the arrestor hook, maybe different radios. The In Action talks about some of the differences, but I don't know how definitive it is.

Can't help on the PE. My few interactions with Airwaves PE have been very mixed. Try to avoid using the Hampden set, on a Hampden or anything else. It is a learning experience. :uxb:

Thanks for the reply Mark.

I have no idea what variant is in the box. Hasegawa simply label the box "A-24 Dauntless 'U.S. Army'". If indeed an A-24 (as opposed to A-24A or A-24B) then according to Wiki, it is the Army equivalent of the SBD-3

I'll just have to familiarise myself a little more with the type and set myself straight with it before doing anything. I want to do a A-24 "hack" operated from Mareeba in northern Queensland but if the kit is not suitable OOB I can either scratch/kitbash to get what I want or just build it as a RNZAF or USN SBD-3, either of which would please me (though I"ll have to check is a Navy tail wheel is included).

Cheers, James.

I picked up the Hasegawa A-24 a few days ago at a very reasonable price but I have a vague recollection of reading a review somewhere that stated it is not an accurate representation of the A-24. Is this correct or is my memory fabricating furphies? I am not really familiar with the SBD series and their differences but if there is a problem, I'd guess it is something about the cowl...

Also, does anyone know if the Airwaves PE sets fit the Hasegawa kit in the way they are supposed to? have the Airwaves interior and exterior sets that I picked up from a second hand vendor many years ago but my past (albeit limited) experience with Airwaves PE has not been good - the couple of times I have used their PE, I could not help wondering if they actually had the kit in hand when they designed the PE to fit it.

Cheers, James.

PS: Hope I'm not "hijacking" the thread - just seemed like the perfect opportunity to ask these questions.
I can help you with this!

A-24 is basically an SBD-3 with a larger Tail wheel, treaded Main Wheels, No Arrester Hook, (but the attachment point was retained), and removed the Flare Launcher ports. That's it. Easy to to do with the Hasegawa kit. The A-24 release had these parts included.

The Airwaves interior set is best used in the Airfix or the Hawk/Testors kit. You want the Jaguar Interior set. You have to buy them direct from Jaguar. If you want droppped flaps, buy the Aries set, not the Eduard set unless you like working with small, tricky parts that have to be perfectly folded and aligned to fit.

Do you have web address, etc. for Jaguar? I did a search, found Jaguar Models, but couldn't find any 1/72nd resin on there.

They must be out of production again. It was re-issued last year. I buy them at Model Shows and on e-Bay all the time. Drop them a note and ask to see if they happen to have any "laying around".

Great discussion here. We, as in the die-hard 72nd scale ( aka......."Divine Scale" ) affectionatos, could certainly use an updated, new tooled TBD Devastor. While the Hasegawa Dauntless` and Avengers are a bit challenging to find, I`m guessing that many of us already have at least one of each "in stock" on our shelves.

I`m hoping the mainstream companies give serious thought to an investment towards a new TBD Devastor.

Thanks! There was a going concern in the late 90's/early 2000's that did resin for WWI kits that went by Jaguar. (I have one set of their 1/48th cameras if anyone is interested) I wasn't sure if he had gone back into production or not. Wasn't familiar with this company or its products.
