Decals for AVG P40s other than white 68?

As the title says, are there decals out there in our scale for any AVG P40s other than Older's "White 68"?

It just seems odd, there were three squadrons which appear to have seen equal amounts of combat. In fact the three top scoring pilots were from the Adam & Eves (#1, #2) and Panda Bears (#3), not the Hell's Angels. Older was one of the 6 AVG pilots credited as a double ace, but was not the top scoring ace of the AVG. Arguably I think it is safe to say there were far more visible / colorful characters (Boyington for one).

I can't figure out why every P40B comes with markings for the same White 68? I can't think of any other aircraft kit that regularly has such a limited range of options.

Not at all meant to disparage Older, just commenting on the lack of recognition for the others.

You need to track down any or all of a set of three decal sheets produced by Eaglecals back in 2001. These were:
EC#30-72 AVG Tomahawks 1st Squadron (4 A/C, no's 1, 3, 7, 21),
EC#31-72 AVG Tomahawks 2nd Squadron (4 A/C, no's 44, 47, 49, 52), and
EC#32-72 AVG Tomahawks 3rd Squadron (3 A/C, no's 47, 75, 88).

Eaglecals had an odd way of using the same instruction sheets for both 1/72 and (ack - spitooie!) 1/48 by manually ticking a checkbox on the instructions depending on the scale of the decals themselves, so make sure if you're buying from someone privately that you really are getting the 1/72 sheet. For example, the first sheet above would have been identified only as "EC#30", with the 1/72 tick-box below that number marked and the 1/48 box left empty.

I hope this helps!

Microscale/Supercale had a sheet with six different AVG options. I don't know if it's currently in production, but it shouldn't be too hard to find. It's sheet #72-10, which should give you an idea how long it's been around.

Good grief Dave. I guess I will have to provide you with a decent article.

The short answer is that #68 was probably the most photographed AVG ac (based on publishe photos). RT Smith had a hobby of photography so a mlot of his pictures including some color shots are the best known. #68 was around quite a while at least till May 1942. Smith's #77 did not make it out of Burma, being wrecked in March at Magwe. Smith later flew #47, also apparently flew #91.

The Minicraft decals for #68are a poor representation based on the photos I have seen. Pavla and Airfix much better.

One thing though, I am unconvinced that #68 had markings on the upper right wing, based on a color photo of several ac in formation taken by Smith. I do know that some had larger or smaller Chinese on the wings, and some at least had none on the bottom (# 23 for sure and at least one other in a lineup of 3rd Sq ac). But since the insignia were painted on in Burma (not at the factory) anything is possible.

Thank you for the leads on other markings, and thank you Skippy for the explanation on the apparent obsession kit makers have with White 68.

Skippy truly knows more on this subject than just about anyone I know. That is why I keep begging him for an article for our club newsletter.

You are most welcome. One thing for sure with AVG markings is that due to the circumstances, the markings were anything but consistent. And markings on individual aircraft changed or evolved from the time they were first uncrated and assembled in 1941 through the disbandment of the AVG in July 1942. Some never received anything more than fuselage numbers, being wrecked early in training ( 1 for example). Others were transferred between squadrons and received revised markings ( 46, 47, 49, 53 to name a few) . Some may not have been photographed at all, and some numbers from 1 through 99 may not have been assigned either.

Another source for Flying Tigers decals is "Bestfong" - see here

http://www.bestfong.com/decal/bestfong-decals-1930-1950

They mainly do WW2 Nationalist Chinese subjects.

I've heard from others that it can be "difficult" to deal with them direct.

Rebelalpha on ebay is a good dealer and stocks many of their items but they don't seem to have the "Flying Tiger" subject (White 77) in stock.

Cheers

I've had my eye on a couple of Bestfong sheets. Wish I could find a good review to get me off the fence. All I've found are short reviews showing the decals, but not discussing their use. I've only found one set of comments describing their use, one poster saying they worked great, and a rebuttal from another who found them horrible...

They have a lot of interesting subjects, particularly as I have recently developed an interest in the pre-1941 Chinese air forces.

I'm familiar with Rebelalpha, he is one of my sources for stuff I have trouble finding through my usual online shops.
