My family will be making a short (3-4 days) visit to Alberta this July. While our east coast son may fly into Calgary, my though has been to base ourselves closer to Lethbridge - If I wanted a big city we could just go to Seattle :haha: But...I realized the Bomber Command Museum of Canada is in Nanton, apparently not too far from Calgary. Any other 'must sees' in the area? The rest of us will be driving from the Spokane area in WA and then north from the eastern side of Glacier

Lethbridge is nice, but it is also a city in the generic sense, it would be roughly 2 1/2 -3 hours from the Calgary International Airport, depending on which route you chose to take and time of day. Lethbridge attractions If I have a choice I do prefer to go there rather then Calgary myself.

It all depends on what you are after, if you want something a bit quieter I could suggest a stay in Claresholm which is more or less between Calgary and Lethbridge, and approximately 1/2 hour south of Nanton, and north of Fort Macloed . Fort Macloed, Oh, and there is the remnants of a universal carrier in Fort Macloed as you drive into town from the west, or was the last time I was there. Depending on what you are looking for accommodation wise Claresholm has a Motel 6 or Bluebird motel among others.

No Matter where you stay one restaurant I do recommend you eat at least once at is Casa Roma Claresholm. My wife and I also like to eat regularly at The Heritage Inn in High River among other places.

While you are in calgary you might also wish to check out theCalgary Military Museum there is also the Hanger Musem which is near the Calgary airport. There are a number of hobby shops in Calgary, but honestly unless you are going out of curiosity I doubt that there is anything that you couldn't get from where you are, however if you are interested I can fill you in on what's available and generally what to expect. There is actually also a hobby shop in High River, Monster Hobbies, if you are interested in checking him out.

With the Nanton Bomber Command Museum I'm not sure what your schedule is like but as they like to drag the old girl out and fire her up once in a while so you might want to check with them on when they plan on doing that, they have all 4 running now so you can enjoy that show if the timing works out for you. Oh and don't forget to stop in at the Nanton Candy Store.

Any other questions please feel free to post or PM me :)

Thanks for the suggestions. It was a video of Lancaster engine starting at Nanton that prompted me to look up the location

What, did a semi truck load of that fake snow you spray on your windows at Christmas overturn or something? Should not the grass be coming up green by now? Who pi$$ed off Mother Nature over there? :haha:

Interesting that you should post a pic of Tim Hortons. Last long weekend, I did a spur of the moment road trip down to Wisconsin with a stop over in Minneapolis and was surprised to find TH down there. Sadly, Timmy's jambusters do not hold their own against a Krispy Kreme jambuster. What's more sad, I could not find a Krispy Kreme anywhere along the way :(

I did however stop at the air museum in Fargo, ND. Not that big of a museum, but very cool for what they have. Unfortunately, I missed the Zero they USED TO HAVE up until a few years ago. Apparently it was going out on loan to another museum and it suffered a major catastrophe and is now residing in a bone yard somewhere. :bh;

However, I did come across a couple of good hobby shops in Minneapolis. _^ Pity that it's a 9 hour drive to get to them... :haha:

Timmies was sold to a Yankee company years ago and has lost a lot of what was good about them. Their coffee blows dead bears now. I haven't had one in a few years. They stopped selling my favourite pastry over a decade ago and now they've changed my favourite sandwich, too. I avoid the place like the plague! For a natural-born and life-long Canadian, this is hard to endure. And now we have that useless pile of fecal matter for our Prime Minister. We're sinking fast!

True that about Timmies, however it's a matter relative to alternatives of the moment, I personaly prefeer the Flying J on the rare occasion I have a cup. They just opened this one last month, and say what you will about them, they are always busy and this one is no different.

I didn't know that about them being sold. Well... I'll be. I like my jambusters - go into a TH these days and ask for one - all you get is a blank stare. They haven't a clue. Mind you, most of the so-called jambusters they sell are not even worthy of being called jambusters.

Get me to a Krispy Kreme!

No arguments from me on that one. Frankly, we were sunk when the idiots in this Country elected that POS.

We have 3 Tim's in our small city and almost all of the Tim's workers weren't born on this continent. You have to speak your English slowly and clearly, and sometimes you have to repeat it. It's just not worth the bother for the crap they serve nowdays.

Oh, you are "served" by TFWs. Seems like all timmy's are staffed by them. Maybe that explains my jambuster issues... :haha:

Don't you think you should make an effort to speak in a language THEY can understand? After all, they came from another part of the the world just to serve you your donuts and coffee...

Ironically, while Tim Horton isn't in my part of the US but where my older son lives (NW Pennsylvania) they are fairly common. One of his ex-girlfriends had a very short duration job at one, canned for serving coffee to a drive-through customer from the eat-in coffee dispenser instead of making the customer wait while drive-through coffee maker was still brewing. Assuming the trip to Alberta happens, he is one flying into Calgary
