Just saw a video for the test flight of this massive (11 foot fan) engine... wondering if they're being considered for B-52's? |

JC, my brother was a B-52 Nav/Radar Nav for 20 years. They've been talking about replacing the 8 engines with 4 big Turbofans for a long time. Believe it or not the fuel savings would pay for the whole project and then some. The biggest problem is asymmetric engine operation. Losing one of 8 engines doesn't really affect the B-52 flight characteristics too badly, but losing one of 4 big thrust turbofans induces yaw problems that are tough to solve in a non-fly-by-wire a/c. |

Hah.... check out Boeings advert for re-engineering the B-52, it's actually not a bad 6min advert for "WHY" but I had to chuckle at the comment for one of the cost benefits was "Reduced Carbon Imprint and Noise"...... yeah, lets nuke and bomb the shit outta someone 'cos we have a lower carbon imprint..... too funny for words really. Anyway here's the link Boeing B-52 |
