Things we don't know about...

Got to looking at Special Hobby's Mirage F.1 with the Iraqi markings that has the Iranian kill board on the nose... then started thinking about the Iraqi Hunter that was discovered with two Israeli Star of David kill marks on it... and had it not been for the subsequent nastiness of the 2003 invasion of Iraq... we might never had known that these two uniquely marked aircraft had ever existed...

Which got me to thinking... wonder what else is or has been out there that we don't know about? (unique markings-wise that is). Wonder how many things may have been lost to history, never to be known about?

I mean stuff still pops up from private photo collections in the West all the time and when you look at the secrecy of past and current regimes, it just makes you wonder.

Considering they're still finding new stuff from the first big one, the amount of stuff out there lurking waiting to be discovered has to be incredible.
Cheers,

That's always been my thinking regarding the trove of photos that appears on ebay.de, including plenty of shots of Russian aircraft wrecks, taken by German soldiers during Operation Barbarossa. Seems like every member of the Wehrmacht had a camera and an unlimited supply of film, so he could share photos of the destruction of the Soviets with family and friends back home. Some useful stuff is always turning up, with a bit of patience and the right search formula!

There is, quite literally, no knowing. Only the tiniest fraction of even WWII photos has ever been published, and there are still veterans from that war who might have things stuffed away that might only see the light of day once they pass away. A couple of dozen governments have archives full of photos that perhaps a researcher or two or three has seen, but no more than that. and publications typically include only the best quality pix, never mind that the flawed ones might show details otherwise undocumented.

I used to think this was a great tragedy. But that glass isn't half empty--it's full to the brim. New stuff comes along from time to time and is poured in, and other stuff is displaced, or maybe the glass just gets a little bigger. found knowledge, like found money, is a cause for celebration, and no need to wonder what else is out there, because something else will assuredly show up.

It is amazing what new photos come out every day. In addition, a lot of photos that have already been published reveal even more info with careful examination. You can get lost online in image searches. Now, I need to get back to the bench.
