Someday I might like to do a Hudson in the markings of A16-211 "The Tojo Busters"... but I'm curious to know what variant this plane is supposed to be. The Warbird in Australia is I believe a Mk.IV... and the Pacific Wrecks database claims a Mk.III... but alternatively, it seems several places on the internet and in publications are claiming either III or IV... so does anyone know which it's supposed to be? And once that is solved, which kits out there can be used? BTW - I notice that the Warbird has cowlings with an intake at the top... but the one fairly decent photo I can find of the original aircraft looks like it does not have intakes at the top of the cowling. Sorry, until this point the Hudson series has not been one of my strong suits. |

Hi mate No expert but this might help. Seems a mkIII from adf serials (very good resource for RAAF related searches) and other sources - see here - http://www.adf-serials.com.au/2a16.htm. Here's some decals - can't comment on how good, etc https://www.modelkitsonline.com.au/m/m-pages/m-stat/decalDisplay-m.php?Key=3310. Kits - the MPM or Revell repop looks like it fits maybe?? Good luck |

It is a Mk III as indicated. Here is an alternate decal sheet - same price with at least one other Hudson you might want to do and maybe more............... http://www.dkdecals.cz/hudsonRAAF_navod1.jpg More than you ever wanted to know about RAAF Hudsons but very interesting https://www.bookdepository.com/RAAF-Hudson-Story-David-Vincent/9780959605228 https://www.amazon.com/RAAF-Hudson-Story-Book-Two/dp/0959605231 |

David Vincent's 2 Hudson books are highly recommended. Thick Hard cover books, highly illustrated. That is a very good price for Vol 1 from Bookdepository. The book originally sold for $70 plus postage in Oz when first released. As for the extortionate price asked for Vol 2 from Amazon , don't even think about paying that..... I guess I just wanna know what truly makes a RAAF Mk.III? I see that a lot of the MPM-based Hudson kits seem to have a lot of different parts for the various cowlings, so trying to figure out from the pics of the original "Tojo Busters" what cowling configuration would need to be used?... but there seems to be missing pieces in the main pic of the aircraft in it's crashed configuration. |

At the outset, a warning: my most comprehensive reference is the Profile 253, and it's entirely possible 'facts' have become errors. Nevertheless: Marks I-III were Cyclone-powered; IV-VI were Twin Wasp-powered. It is confused a bit by the British originally assigning some of the Twin Wasp examples to earlier marks, but eventually reassigned the marks to reflect the above demarcation. The Mark III was the first variant to have the ventral gun. It also had more powerful engines than the I and II. All of these were direct British order aircraft. The Mark IIIA was a Lend-Lease A-29; I'm not sure if there are any easily-seen differences between the III and IIIA. The MPM kit is what you want for a III or IIIA; although there are redundant cowling pieces for the P&W version, there are no engines. Conversely, the Italeri version has extra pieces for the Cyclone cowling, but no R-1820s. It'll do for a Twin Wasp Hudson. |

Before you start, be warned that the MPM Hudson is generally regarded as a poor fit. I did get one, partly out of the feeling that it couldn't possibly be that bad (could it?) but the P&W engine cowlings are too large (more like Hercules) and although I did get Red Roo replacements the kit has yet to climb up the "must do next" lists. |

I have an old Airfix Hudson, which according to the instructions builds a "Hudson 1" which I assume is a Mk 1. The kit looks like the typical later Airfix with adequate detail (and lots of rivets), and at does have basic flight deck / forward area interior detail. Also Have the Revell Hudson Mk I / II (MPM?). The detail looks nice and crisp sitting in the box and it does have a detailed interior including the rear fuselage (not that you could actually tell once built). I'm not sure if it includes the bits to build a Mk III or not. |

Just picked up the MPM A-29 that I think has the proper bits. |

IIRC, the Airfix kit has the ventral gun position, which would make it a III (or a hybrid). And if the MPM is really only a I/II, it would not have the ventral gun position. In terms of appearance, I don't think there's all that much difference among the marks except for the ventral gun position.
