Provoked by Steve's post in the 'where's everyone' thread' I'll be there, but I'm unclear whether I will try to transport a model for the competition. Flying in, it's a pretty big hassle to get the poor thing there and back intact. |

The wife and I are going. Flying out on Saturday and spending a few days in Flagstaff with sightseeing in Sedona and the Grand Canyon. Like you, I don't plan to bring any models..way too much hassle when travelling by air. SN |

Flagstaff is pretty cool and very walkable. We just spent one day there in mid-August 2016. It's not too hot in August, but the air is very dry--I needed eye drops to feel comfortable there. We also spent a day taking the train into and back out from the Canyon. Pretty fun and hassle-free, even though we were restricted to the South Rim area and only had about four hours. I really want to get to the North Rim some time, but that's a whole 'nother thing. |

We have a brother and his wife as well as another couple who are good friends, especially with my wife all retired in the vicinity, but but we will see the brother and spouse this winter when snow is on the ground here and are taking a cruise to Alaska with the other couple in September. When I suggested a vacation to Phoenix in August I was laughed from the room.

Nope..next year is Chattanooga. They're taking bids this year for 2020 and 2021. The only possible bids I've heard mentioned are San Marcos, TX and maybe Portland. I was doing some reseach today and found that Meteor Crater is only about a half-hour east of Flagstaff..definitely gonna check that out. My wife wants see Winslow anyway. I saw the crater on our last trip to Phoenix for the '04 Nats, but from 35,000 ft. SN |

Having live there for a short bit, I always recommend everyone to go to South Mountain (South Park?)... if I recall correctly you go South on Central Ave until it basically dead-ends at a park. On the West side of the park is a street that starts going up the side of the mountain... takes about a half-hour to climb something like 7,000 feet above the valley floor and there's parking and a lookout at the top... really pretty at night after dark as you can literally see 80-some miles East-West of almost all the main Phoenix suburbs and can see the curvature of the Earth in the city lights! Dark voids in the lights are other mountains rising up out of the valley floor... really weird when you don't know what they are and then figure out that you're seeing city lights totally surrounding a lone mountain! The night life in old down-town Tempe on Mill Ave between 1st and 7th Streets West of ASU is something to behold too! Lots of shops, bars, restaurants, late night movie theatres, etc. Just don't cruise up and down the Ave more than a few times... the cops issue cruising tickets!

Oh, Aug 1-4th, I might be able to swing that if I'm not on a fire. The Meteor Crater is interesting. It is kind of out of the way and just a big hole in the ground, but I thought it was kind of neat. That whole Flagstaff area is worth exploring though if you've got the time. You can find the old Camel trail that passes north of Winslow. one of the few remaining artifacts of the short lived US Army Camel Corps. Route 66 and I-40 later followed much of the same route. https://www.legendsofamerica.com/we-bealeroad/ The Hall of Flame in Phoenix is worth a look if you like fire engines and such. http://www.hallofflame.org/ |
