It would be nice of you to allow access without logging into Facebook; as I can do if I go to your page via Google. Not all of us who use this forum are Facebook members. |

Jeff Time spent modeling is not deducted from your lifespan. I spent most of my money on beer and women. The rest of it I just wasted. | |

I have a Faecbook account somewhere but I never use it. I'd say Martin@AMK is catering to a different subset of modellers to what's here on this board. Edit - I clicked on the link, saw you had to log in and lost interest! |

Please don't take offense, folks - I don't have an account, and I'd rather not be pushed into joining, but! This reminds me of a rather lengthy thread on Plane Talking a few weeks ago, discussing whether or not Facebook spells the end for conventional forums, with a lot of heel-dragging over the need to join. I hate to say it, but that in turn reminded me of the dying days of rec.models.scale - last time I looked, a few years ago, all that was left was a few die-hard holdouts, condemning these new-fangled "forum" things, like the one we're currently posting on, right here. And that discussion made me imagine a cluster of Neanderthals in their dark cave, muttering about the Cro-Magnons down the valley, with their evil "fire". The more things change, the more they stay the same, I guess! John |

Our club has a Facebook page, about half the members are on it, but the bit that I struggle with is posting about models but not mixing that with my sailing and Jeep passions. In other words, how do I keep that all separate? I don't want to see John's musings on the Neanderthal FB page anymore than he might not want to read mine on CJ heater cores. It's why I stopped using FB, I got tired of reading about the drunken escapades of my nieces... Tim |

No, I might find that quite interesting - I had two XJ's, and I'm currently driving a KJ, but please don't hold that against me! John |

My 2 cents. Facebook is a valuable communication tool. Our club uses it not only for promotion but as a way to communicate urgent info, such as the sudden death of a members wife. I don't think it will replace forums, as back and forth communication gets swallowed up in the stream of everything. BTW, if you want to see a good example of using Facebook for marketing purposes, take a look at Roy with Barracuda. He does an excellent job using facebook "correctly". |

The existence of this very forum is my own reason for not using Facebook. It is not some troglodyte's excuse that I often read, such as my fear of modern technology. (IBM'rs are by definition Not afraid of technology) I've seen what Anne has on her Facebook page each day. Poems "about do people care about me", cats doing funny things, road signs, photoshopped "true pictures" and stories,,,,,etc, etc. We are here on this forum because in the vast sea of models, our's have a rep that says we aren't "mainstream enough." (and all the other things that go with being a 72scaler) My music gets posted to Anne's Facebook wall, because she wants to share that with our friends and family,,,,,,,,and those videos land into streams of all the other things that Facebook walls contain. I simply don't want my models to become "just another" post in a sea of all the other things that get put on Facebook walls. Let's face it,,,our 1/72 Piper Cubs are just another variation of "my favorite BBQ grill design" to all the other people with Facebook accounts. (a Cub post would be just as valid, but no more so, as a "look, I saw a rainbow" post) So, I consciously choose to post model stuff on model forums, for like minded people to discuss,,,,,,,avoiding the "awe, isn't it cute" stuff that I know would get posted by the guy looking for pictures of 1/1 Hemi Cudas. I hang out on a couple of different forums, if they are "1/72 friendly enough",,,,,and try to post helpful things for fellow modelers. And yes, I know,,,,,,,I could sign up for three Facebook pages, one for models, one for music,,,,,,,,,,and one for all that other stuff. But, it is not the fear of, or lack of ability to use, technology,,,,,,,,,it is just a conscious choice to keep models out of the sea of "info" that is the Facebook universe. |

I'd like to know who the "we" are - did I miss another election for another God-Space king spokesperson for all modellers? Long story short folks, you can create a Facebook account *just for modelling* and give away *no more information* than it takes to join this place. That's it. Facebook can no more mine any extra information out of you than you give in the first instance, which would be an email address. Nothing else. You also get to control your news feed, so if you are only interested in a certain group or page, that is all you get on your feed. You do not have to accept friend requests. You can exist as a solitary presence on FB taking advantage of the resources it offers. I'd suggest some people drag themselves out of the 20th century and *try it* before writing it off as some thing of suspicion or one short step from the black helicopters and the UN taking their gurns away. A few years ago there were people who resolutely said that online modelling forums were not their thing. Times change, if you're rather proud of existing behind the zeitgeist then that's your prerogative. It's at times like this I'm glad there are people out there who move this hobby forward and save it from atrophy and stagnation. |

So, Jonathan, Help me understand how this entire thread would be replicated in FB, with a bit of meandering off topic, inserting of the odd photo, quoting particular snippets, etc? And then the entire set of threads, organized as they are here? Short of "friending" 1,000+ modelers here in 72ndScale, how would I get to see their models, read their posts about many esoteric topics, and then sometimes search something because I remember reading it? OBTW, I've NEVER had a Google search return results from a FB page when searching for modeling info specific to the subject I'm researching (ok, maybe after page 5 but who looks past page 2 on a Google search?). Not even searches for manufacturers...I get their .com site which DOES have a "like us on FB" icon/button. I cannot fathom having multiple accounts, for a single site. Why oh why would I want to do that? I've already got pages of userids to keep passwords aligned to, for single accounts. Multiples? I'll close with an observation: FB is for older established users, not the young crowd. My nephews and nieces remind me that they only use FB because gramma likes to get pictures. Otherwise they are on [insert social media site here] and it seems to change with the seasons. Yes, because the buying power is with middle aged folks, you market to them and therefore need to be on FB, or Pinterist, or ?? Tim |

I was never going to join Facebook since I'm not that talkative in the first place. Then I found a link to one of the Fighter Groups that I enjoy researching/reading about. There was more photo's than I could dream of from relatives and others. So I did a search and found many more on Fighter Groups .P-47 etc. I joined but only post on mine a few times to keep in touch with family but I have many photo's of P-47, P-51's that I saved to help with models I might build You can join but you don't have to post all that fluff stuff and get to see all the Model companies. Half my friends are model geeks too or family and couple of people from work. That is only 40 last time I looked. Good way to send a birthday wish with out seeing that 'person' you really don't want to visit. If you don't join, some Facebook pages are public so anyone can view the page. Now cell phones are a different story, I still have no cell phone. I know I'm a Dinosaur . Rick |
