Having recently finished Blue Moon over Cuba and Osprey's RF-8 Units book, my interest in this version of this beautiful aircraft has been rekindled.

I know no one makes an RF-8 in God's One True Scale out of the box. However does anyone currently make the conversion? Have they in the past?

Falcon makes a vacuform conversion, Hannants stocks it. I can't comment on the accuracy or quality of the parts.

ISTR someone saying they/there is a state of the art conversion coming out??? But this has been awhile so maybe the project was shelved?
I would like to see one, got the Falcon version somewhere but would prefer to mate it with the Academy kit!

As I said a long time ago, use the Falcon conversion on the Academy F-8E boxing, with the Muroc F-8A nose, just be a little creative in how you cut and preserve those RF-8 cheek fairings as you add the Muroc nose to the build. (you'll see what needs to be done when you gather the pieces up) The Muroc nose is required because the Falcon, Venture, and AirModel conversions all have you use the thick F-8E/J nose on their parts, which is not correct.

For an RF-8G, an A-7 type (as on the correct F-8J) main landing gear, and for the RF-8G after SLEP, add the afterburner scoops on the rear fuselage.

If building one of the five RF-8A upgraded just before the RF-8G program, include the rear ventral stabilizers under the fuselage (as found on F-8E)

Decals are available for an RF-8 from Wolfpak decals (oops, sorry, "were available"http://millcreekconsultants.com/WP72-11.html ), if using these, just use the version it builds into.

There were two other conversions, but seeking out the AirModel or Ventura parts is not worth the extra effort.

Just cut the Academy fuselage, cut the Falcon fuselage off shorter, slice off the front of the Falcon fuselage to add the Muroc piece, preserving the cheeks, and plan on a bit of rescribing after assembly. Muroc sets include a new vac canopy in them, so that is taken care of. A Quickboost F-8 seat will probably be helpful, too. For very early RF-8A, get the wheels from Muroc when you order the nose set.

Since the decals are now sold out, get and modify a set from one of the Esci kits for PP coded F-8E/H/J versions.

(I mention that I said it a while back, because it is now info included in one of the Wolfpak decal instructions, I didn't want anyone thinking that I typed it up from there)

edit, Xtradecal makes a more current PP coded decal set, I forgot that one, it is sheet number X72-160, probably easier to find than the Esci stuff. and for part numbers, scroll through the F-8 portion of my stash for RF-8 parts.https://www.scalemates.com/profiles/mate.ph...q=*&fkSTASHMATE[ and just click on the F-8 circle on the right column.
yep, one of each USN squadron

The only SotA RF-8 set I know of is in 1/48 (Fisher). Doesn't mean there isn't another

I wonder if Fisher would consider scaling his RF-8 set down?

Thank you Rex,

This is outstanding and just the summary I've been looking for.

I have all of the conversions, Falcon, Ventura, and RVHP. I don't have the Muroc early radome but I do have the Esoteric.

One warning about the Esoteric's radome.

They wanted us to stick that small round radome onto an unmodified F-8E fuselage. The F-8A/RF-8 radome wasn't round, and when the large radome was added to make the E and later versions, there were fairings going back from the radome to an area back along towards the canopy area.

All F-8 kits, except one that we don't build anymore, are E and J noses. So, the radome has to be "squashed in" on the sides, and the fairings removed from the fuselage behind it. (the fairings are thicker than the kit plastic sides)

Tom "Superheat" has a set of photos that he posts when early nosed Crusaders get asked about,,,,,,they clearly show these differences in shapes.

Muroc's piece is more than the radome, it is the area up to right under the windscreen/canopy split, accounting for those fairings being removed. He also includes a vac canopy that eliminates the need to fill in the IR sensor hole that is molded into the various kit's injected windscreen.

Somewhere on here is a set of photos that I once posted that shows the Muroc parts included in each F-8A/B and F-8C/D conversion set, and the wheels he sells.

There are pictures of the Muroc nose conversions here - http://www.internetmodeler.com/2006/august...in_muroc-f8.php
and probably lots more information on their Faecebook page - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Muroc-Model-...427037150895856
I'm sure I have one somewhere and maybe the wheels ..............?

Thanks Rex, and yes I think it was Fisher who had planned to do the conversion. I have his 'Connie' pieces and they are fantastic!!! Hope he scales the 'other' scale down to 72nd!!

I just got an email from Fisher. They do plan to scale down the RF-8 to 72nd and 48th. I will await developments.

Ed, that link and facebook page is for a flying model club called the Muroc Model Masters.

Dave Newman sold under the name Muroc Models, and Newman R&D. (the flying club is probably why he changed back to Dave Newman)

I have the pieces gathered for the three that I want to do, so I probably won't wait for a "future kit".

I know this might be the wrong move, considering that I had an AD-5W and TF-9J done, and now we have kits for those. But, sometimes "someday" can be a long time off.

A couple of years back, a list was posted supposedly by Wolfpack (not the decal guy) in Korea was going to do several full 1/72 kits. This was just about the time when their 1/48 T-38 was out there and the 1/72 T-2 Bugeye was coming out. On the list was the RF-8, along with other tasty kits for the F-106 (too late now), T-38, and IIRC a TF-9J. But things mover very slowly in this business, and I never got confirmation on any of these. Damn.
