Dear friends,

I have the sad duty to inform you that Rolf “Popeye” passed away on September 7, 2016.

An aircraft enthusiast since childhood, he did an apprenticeship as an aircraft mechanics.

Scale modelling was his life. In 1971 he was one of the founding Members of the Swiss Branch of IPMS and for many years its president. Besides modelling, in the latter years he was also very active on 72nd Scale Aircraft and other forums.

When I joined IPMS Switzerland as a teenager I always admired his modelling style. He never chose easy to build models, but rather enjoyed converting models into a different version, as you could follow on several of his “In Progress Models” contribution. Reconnaissance plains were one of his favourite topics and all in the only one true scale 72nd!

With Rolf we are losing not only a very active modeller but also a brilliant companion and a very close friend for more than forty years.

To his wife Irene and his children, we want to express our heartfelt condolences.

I am greatly saddened by this news.

Even though I never met him in person, I considered Rolf a kindred spirit and a true friend. His builds were an inspiration, and he was always ready to share his insights and offer encouragement to others. He and I exchanged parts and emails, my enjoyment of the hobby is better as a result.

Rolf, you will be missed!

Fair winds and following seas my friend.
Jeff

Time spent modeling is not deducted from your lifespan.

I spent most of my money on beer and women. The rest of it I just wasted.

It's very, very sad news.

He was always like a mentor to me, not only about modeling, but also in many other topics.
His stories and all his knowledge as well as his helpful and warm-hearted personality will be missed. He will be missed.

Blue Skies Rolf - aka Popeye. :(
May you finish your two P-38's in your new haven...

This is very, very sad to hear.

I had tremendous respect for Rolf, both as a person and as a fellow modeller.
Like Jeff, I never had the pleasure to meet him in person, but he was always extremely helpful and willing to share information and give support.

I will miss him a lot.

My condolences to his family.

This saddens me greatly. Most of us here, of course, have never met. Like many of you, his builds served as quite an inspiration to me.
Funny how a person's personality comes out in their posts. From his, I always assumed he was a great deal younger than me. I guess his enthusiasm and love of what he was doing made him seem that way to me. I've run across a couple of things this morning to cause me great introspection, and this event, and my impression of him will add to the figurative walk along a path I must take today.

Godspeed to you Rolf. My condolences and prayers for his loved ones.

I'm very sorry to hear this. We can never afford to lose those who make a positive contribution, as Rolf clearly did. And he had a unique perspective to add on this forum.

RIP Popeye.
