It is well known that I HATE acrylics. Never found one that sprayed as well as an enamel or lacquer. Also never found one I could sand.

What is your go to paint line. Mine is WEM/Colourcoats. Hard to obtain with limited distribution in the US, but sprays beautifully, Love the finish.

So what say you?

Aeromaster Acrylics, PollyScale, and Lifecolor, in that order.

All of them can be sanded, and all adhere with a simple primer coat beforehand. (just like my Enamels did)

In fact, Aeromaster and PollyScale Acrylic clears are the toughest clears I ever used.
yep, one of each USN squadron

Absolutely Xtracolour. Which needless to say has become a significant problem. I'm still fairly deep in most colors but my stocks are starting to run low. I prefer the gloss surface - I've never been good at applying Future over matt paints. My backup will eventually be WEM/Colourcoats if I can find a consistent and reasonably priced US source.

Mr. Color, but I've really only got the paint to do US and RAF WWII aircraft.

I've got a large back-stock pf PollyScale, which has the broadest set of colors for WWII aircraft for what I own. I use it as necessary. I've long since mastered it, but acrylics are hard to clean up compared to lacquers, and Polly Scale seems to be worse than most.

And then there's Tamiya. I love and hate the acrylics. Brush touch-up is unreliable, and a lot of the colors have to be mixed. There are very few things in the hobby that tee me off more than having to mix paint to match a spec. The lacquer rattle cans are expensive, and while I sometimes do use them straight up, I decant as well, and it's another way to go wrong. That said, their canned lacquers are the good stuff.

I have a random selection of enamels, mostly car colors. I hate the smell, they take forever to dry, and I've got better solutions. They are easier to use than acrylics, I'll grant, but not easier than lacquer. And for whatever reason, the smell of Mr. Color does not get to me the way enamels do. Apart from my one tin of Humbrol (aluminum) I hardly ever use them.

I also use Alclad II--I've got about six metallic shades. It's very good NMF, and I'm happy to use it when I want to go that route.

I have large stocks of Humbrol, which I use mainly for "general" work and for undercoats, because of their fine covering qualities. So far I have avoided the worst of the quality dip period, undoubtedly because of those large stocks. That they are the only good enamel available at my local hobby shop no doubt helps. I also have good stocks of Xtracolour but mainly for RAF and Luftwaffe use. Beyond those subjects, including Warship and AFVs, I use Colourcoats. Xtracolour and Colourcoats are predominantly for final coats. The last two are predominantly for final coats.

I still have survivors of Airfix, Precision Paints, Gloy and maybe even other ranges.

Of non-enamels, I've tried acrylic Tamiya Japanese greens but didn't like them. I've sampled Mr Color (for Japanese tanks) - like all lacquer paints, the smell is far more intense than enamels - and found them promising. They didn't cover well on their own but went quite happily on top of Humbrol undercoats. I've some Akan for Russian use but haven't tried it yet.

The main drawback to experimenting further with acrylics is this vast stock of enamels. Partly because Acrylics do not cover the whole range I have to hand, and partly the cost of replacing those I do. Plus the problem that experimenting with new systems eats into time available for the kits I have to make, so unless (as with Mr Color and Akan) they cover ranges not available in enamel, why bother?

Tamiya, Gunze Aqueous, Vallejo, Model Master, Humbrol -- acrylics in that order.

Humbrol, Model Master -- enamels rarely used, but in that order.

I actually like the mixing process. Gives me a "feel" for the color.

I'm a "green shirt" because I work on the carrier's flight deck and maintain US Navy aircraft. Safe sorties are my life so we can be anywhere, anytime -- from the Sea.

H & B Hobbies out of MA has a good selection and good stock.

Testors Model Master enamels thinned with lacquer thinner, mainly because of availability. I have learned not to trust anything Testors puts on their bottles describing colors, but mix the paints to match chips and then vary the tone for fading, scale effect, weathering, etc. There is a paradox of trying to match the color and then altering it. I also put ketchup in my steak.

Time spent modeling is not deducted from your lifespan.

I spent most of my money on beer and women. The rest of it I just wasted.

Depending on the quality of the steak, sometimes Ketchup is necessary.

I have found myself switching to Mr Color from MM Acryl and my depleted PollyScale supply. Mr Color has been refereed to by many as "God's Paint" and the more I use it, the more I agree. I can thin it to the consistency of a wash and it still covers like a primer. Dries fast, lots of colors, and at $1.60 for a 10ml bottle, cheaper than any other paint I buy. Downside I have to get it shipped from Hong Kong, so it's a 2 month wait. You learn quickly to stock up or pay $3.50 a bottle to the 2-3 US Stockists.

I have also used quite a bit of Humbrol, the older the tin, the better. Just flows so well, covers pretty well, and leaves such a smooth finish.

Gunze Aqueous is a brand I used since the '80s. VHTF lately until I found the store in Hong Kong, so I can get it for $1.50 a bottle. Some of the gloss colors took months to dry (Even when thinned with Mr Color Leveling thinner), so I stopped using the gloss colors.

I still have a large stash of MM enamels and Tamiya Acrylics that have it's uses. I am using up my stash of Xtracolor, Aeromaster, Floquil Military, Pactra International Colors, and WEM paint as the need arises. I will replace them with Mr Color or Gaia (Another Japaneese Acrylic Lacquer like Mr Color) as needed. Colorcoats has just priced themselves out of consideration and I just don't see why I should pay $5 for 10ml of paint when I can get as good, if not better paint for $1.60.
