It hit me like a body hits a road at 62mph.... a huge package arrived from Hannants yesterday..... WTF I asked myself, I only ordered a plethora of resin parts and decals, WTF is this big bloody box? Now as far as I know Czech Republic is part of the EU, so they should be working under EU guidlines for using recycling products, green promotion and all that, ya know planet friendly resources.... so while I piss myself throwing up at Eduards sickly stupid tit and fanny videos to promote modelling - by God I don't want to think sensible non modellers think we are all a bunch of soft porn dick weeds or God forbid train spotters in anoraks, I now have to realize that buying Eduards products are adding humongous amounts of waste crap into landfills. So an example..... The new Spitfire, here comes 5 new resin cowlings and 4 sets of exhausts, tiny freaking little bits of resin.... now take a look at all the non recyclable package that went around them, not to mention the postage box, so the only thing I can do is recycle the paper instructions, the rest goes into the ground for a thousand years, outlasting any model that I will ever make. Why not at least use a recyclable plastic? Eduard, you suck. This sort of stupidity is endemic from these Czech suppliers... get a freaking grip people and minimize all this wasteful business of yours. And stop making stupid porn videos, that's how things were done to promote men toys in the '70s, it's now 2016... grow up, your modelling clientele is probably in their 50s now.. |

Everything in that picture is recyclable here (Indiana). We put in blue bins and it gets collected once each week. Our household recycling volume is greater than our landfill volume. Landfill would be even less if it wasn't for all the cat litter, which I guess is a pretty good thing to put in a landfill anyway. |

Non of that plastic has a recycle symbol which is required, so I can't recycle it in NYS, the foam is not recyclable so that just leaves the paper. If I'm mistaken about the plastic it still doesn't let Eduard and off the hook for such excessive package design. Totally wasteful. I just find it daft, when you buy a kit, in most cases and with most manufacturers they cram everything into the smallest box possible so why not apply the same principle here? Sat morning gripe over.... I use the cat litter in the compost bin, keeps the mice away. |

Up here, on The Backside Of Beyond, in The Great North Woods, we are given 3 bins. Black is for normal household trash, light blue for wood, paper and cardboard to be recycled and finally a dark blue bin for metal and plastic recycling. Collection is once a week, the recycling bins go out on alternating weeks. Chris |

I don't buy a lot of Eduard's products, but when I saw their adverts, I thought it is better if I never buy any Eduard products, since I don't want my man boobs enhanced with resin aftermarket implants. That is what they sell now, right?

Amazon also send out large boxes containing small books, but the packaging tends to be airbags so slightly less wasteful. Clearly they have some agreement with the post, as they clearly aren't paying by box size, or they'd have tidied up their act. We have four bins, but there's severe restrictions on the plastics that can be recycled, basically only the soft ones. |

Like wise the last couple of boxes I've had from Hannants, I shudder to think of their carbon footprint carrying a box three time larger than need be to the other side of the world, filled with packing in the main, all for some resin & decals. I'm guessing 'cause its easier than cutting something down to fit. In defence of Eduard & other CZ producers, maybe its because I can't afford a royal class boxing of any of Eduard's stuff but I find their packing pretty much in line with the others & in the main recyclable. For all that people bang on about recycling, why the heck haven't we got an international convention that forbids any non recycable packaging. We still get locally produced stuff with no recycle marks on it which to my mind makes a nonsense of the whole deal & should've been outlawed years ago. Do we really want to save the panet or just pretend. Steve. |

For most countries, just pretend is about right......... Plastics are not easy or economical to recycle. That's one reason they have the type marks on the plastic as contamination of the plastic renders it useless
As well as plastic models this is a staple product of Czech industry - one of the side effects of having the words "models' and "Czech" in your internet search is to find this out. |

The planet will be just fine, it will be here long after we have eliminated ourselves. The only real way to "save the planet" is to control the size of the human population. Cutting our waste and energy consumption by half won't make a bit of difference if there are four times as many people. You will know governments are getting serious about environmental issues when they put effective global controls on birthrates. Until then the problem will worsen. |

Here we have single thread recycling: it all goes in one bin, if it's recyclable. No foam, no plastic bags (or similar), all metal, all plastic, all paper/cardboard (but not if waxed). Bags go to Giant (grocery chain) because they recycle plastic bags. That just leaves foam. Electronics go in a separate box, as do batteries. Fluids go into tanks, marked appropriately (oils, coolants, other). Unfortunately, many still just throw it all in the landfill bin, too easy not to recycle. Our recycle bin fills long before the trash bin does. |

I have a load of clam shells I think they are recyclable, but I have found they make for useful palettes when painting. They are fairly air tight and keep the paint in a usable state for a while. The sponges I would keep for using as bunging material to shove in open cockpits when spraying. If you make war gaming terrain they would be nifty for making hedges. |

Just a tip. That foam can be used to mask wheel wells and cockpit openings. I like that stuff and squirrel away all I find. |

As an environmental science professional, I'd like to thank Eduard and the rest of the earth for the sheer amount of garbage we produce as it will ensure that me and my colleagues will have a job... for perpetuity. If you've never been to a transfer station, where municipal waste is sorted and landfilled in the states, its very enlightening and should probably be mandatory as part of our education curriculum. The sheer amount and types of waste that support our lifestyle is truly monumental. Interestingly enough, in East Asia, municipal wastes are usually incinerated, probably due to limited space. Perhaps coincidentally, some of the biggest culprits of over-packaging are from East Asia. When wastes are incinerated, they are converted into air emissions which are then spread around the globe rather than being localized in a smaller area like a landfill. Like it or not, the future is in making sure that I get the benefits (overpackaging guarantees my resin bits arrive in good shape) while the rest of the planet or future generations share the costs. Regarding the scarcity of redemption centers for recyclables, its true, the number of recycling centers has decreased recently. The current cost of raw materials including metals is at a historical low, which has driven many recyclers out of business. Simply the free market at work. Government regulations probably keep costs high for recyclers but its a dirty business and no one wants a dirty business to operate in their backyards without significant oversight. If my career has taught me anything, there are no easy solutions where wastes are concerned. Good thing I have my models to distract me. |
