Scratch building it is not a very diffused attitude among modelers, so I thought could be worth to describe the way I use for these models. It is as follows:
Fuselage
• Find on books or the web a decent and reliable three view of the aircraft
• Open Power point and draw two lines that represent the fus length in 1/72
• Print it and then derive a clear plastic template
• Use it to cut on very thin plastic sheet two templates.
• Join them together with a little glue drop and file were they could be slightly different and the separate them.
• Go on the spare box (I never thrown away any models I’ve scrapped)
• Find fuselage that or part of it then can match with some addition or filing/sanding or putty (I use for that Milliput) and glue them on the templates .
• Cut inside the templates in the cockpit area so to have room for details and add some frame here and there to make the stronger.
• Joint he two parts together, not forgetting a floor for cockpit.
• Complete the filing/sanding and filling with putty.
• Alternative for square section fuselage is to cut a thick template of the plan view of the fus, then cut sides in thick plastic , safely glue them to above template an then do the same for upper and lower side. (in cutting template and side take into account the thickness of the plastic you will use),

Wings and tail surfaces
• Again go to the scrap box looking for for parts that may fit.
• If nothing is found draw again a template from the drawing and use it to cut plastic sheet until the desired thickness is achieved and glue them together (for big thickness a central “spar” could be added and the just glue leading and trailing edge).
• After sanding as required and carving flying surfaces and panels fit the fus (an cross though pin may help for proper dihedral)
• When glue is safely dried use putty as required to fill the join and the back fairing.

Cockpit
• Find a good picture or drawing of the control panel and print it (reduced to required size) on card board to then glue it on a plastic sheet .
• Find also a good picture of the whole cockpit and seat and try to reproduce as much as you can.

Canopy
• Carve a piece of wood or plastic glued on your fus room with whit glue (a similar canopy and putty may help)
• Cut on a piece of plywood an hole just a bit larger that your mould plan view and using a stapler secure a sufficiently thicker piece of transparent PVC
• Remove the mould and glue residuals and secure a pin on the back of it.
• Warm the PVC attached to the plywood (far better if you can use an electrical heated plate instead of flame)
• Secure the mould pin on a bench vise and press the mould trough the hole in the plywood to shape the PVC . be sure of going below mould bottom end and keep it pressed for about a couple of minutes.
• Cut the PVC as required.

Undercarriage and propeller
• Again go to the spare box to find suitable legs and wheels.

Paint everything as required, put decals
Finally discover that some unknown firm has in the mean time issued a good kit for the aircraft you just finished !!!! (it was so for my SM 82...)

When I was scratch building my FW 47 I've put some pictures about the various step during the build. You may find it in the "in progress model" section around september 2014.
For my next scratch buil I'll try to take better picture-

The Schiffer Pub's are not sending to Italy (I don't know why).
The first book is available with Amazon for around $60 (52 Euro), plus P&P, while the second is not. That is a bit strange cause the price quoted by Schiffer for the first book is some $30
I don't feel very comfortable in spending that money to possibly learn something new about what I'm doing since more then 50 years...

I have noticed that Amazon's prices on aviation books is often ridiculous. Case in point, The 25th Bomb Group (rcn) In World War II. Retail is $69.99. They wanted over $600.00 for it. That was hot off the press, new book. Oh yeah, if you are interested in American PR mosquito ops, this is the book you need.
Cheers,
Woody

It is a bit funny. Searching on Amazon I've found your 25th Bomb Group book ranging from 125.88 Euro down to 55.32 Euro (roughly $ 64).
There is more then one issue of this book?

Not that I know of. It's good to see they're getting more realistic with their pricing, although anything over MSRP for a new product is ludicrous. I had seen it in a new books section of a magazine when it first came out. As this is a subject I've long had an interest in, I immediately went to Amazon. The magazine mentioned the MSRP, so I was quite shocked by what Amazon was asking. I got mine direct from Schiffer. Haven't looked at Amazon since.
Cheers,
Woody
