A local widow decided to get rid of the remains of her husband's stash. He passed away a number of years ago. All the larger scale kits are gone (her son sold those at a local meeting months ago) and through the grapevine they came to me as it was known I build 1/72 exclusively. Frog, Airfix, Heller and others from the 70's and earlier. The bagged stuff is still sealed. About 125 kits. None are collector's items and all have better kits today from the mainstream or even limited run folks. The decals are long useless as the entire box was in a garage (humid, cardboard reeks of mold/mildew). I'm President of the local club, and we do a raffle every month so it's an obvious way to distribute them, however most members would not build these older kits. I'd build them, however I've got most of them already and the ones I don't have is for a reason (I have a newer kit that is much better detailed and easier to build). I suspect these "leftovers" are what the usual collectors refused to even pay a $1 for at the local swap meets. I'd pay that for the Heller Spitfire XVI and/or the Airfix Spitfire Vb, but that's about it as it's the going rate anymore. Any ideas? I'm leaning towards taking one or two a month and just making it "free" and if nobody takes it, bring it home and maybe build it to put spare decals on. Tim |

It's a good day to build.

I probably wouldn't mess with the ones where the shape is noticeably wrong or they are known to have major fit issues. Sometimes the old kits can be fun just to see what you can do with them. Build them alongside a more modern kit and fix what you can. Look at the "good" kit's parts and cast resin replacements for the old kit, or duplicate features from the new kit with Evergreen. It's really simple if you've got a better part to work from in 3-D right on your bench. You also get to use that second set of markings you almost decided to try. Failing that, maybe someone here would build some of them. |

Jeff Time spent modeling is not deducted from your lifespan. I spent most of my money on beer and women. The rest of it I just wasted. | |

The folks over at "What If Modelers" might be interested in some since they do a lot of cobbling together or odd kit parts, or may be willing to use older kits for colors/markings whiffery. DG |

I'd say list them here, for the cost of postage. If nothing else, there would be some value for parts, but probably not $1 per kit net of postage. And that would at least clear some of the clutter. I've been buying stuff liek this lately at the club for $1 per kit (no mailing cost, of course). |

Call me a masochist if you like, but I LOVE ancient kits. At the very worst they could provide spare parts for experimentation. For instance, I'd sacrifice a bunch of old Airfix or Frog Typhoons in an attempt to build a Tornado. As we speak, I'm trying to figure out how to combine parts of the old, hopelessly inaccurate Airfix Defiant I to complement a surplus fuselage that came with a Special Hobby TT version of that aircraft. And I find the experiment quite enjoyable. PM me with a list and suggested price for those kits, plus postage. Thanks. |

I was the guy who used to buy up all the old British kits for a buck. When I moved cross country, I realized that I buy the kits, but rarely build them; usually opting for a newer tooling. So I gave them away, and in few cases, trashed the kits. So yea, my suggestion would be to give them away or list them for postage only. There are a few that might be on my radar for minimal cost, but the older I get the more I realize building and updating the classic kits are less likely to happen. Jim |

We do a kit auction every year. We do have collections of such sorts given to us from time to time as well. In the auction, we'll bundle kits together. But in the end, they usually end up going to the donation box. Kids at our show can just get a free kit (or more). |

I support the idea of giving them to (potential) young modellers. At several modelling shows here in Holland they have a "make and take" table where kids can make a simple model during the show. This is quite liked and a good way to get them hooked :D. I also know of several modellers who work in educational fields and use old models to support their handicraft lessons. Gr. Sjaak |

1. Pull out the few you want to keep. 2. Give away the ones wanted by friends, suitable for kids, etc. 3. Bundle the rest in a single Ebay listing and return the proceeds to the widow. |

Thanks for all the ideas. I've decided to make the list available to the members of our local club, and if anyone wants anything it's theirs. There were a couple I wanted, but when I opened the box, a different kit inside! One was a 1/48 Me-163 and the other an Airfix Buffalo. the 1/48 kits will go into our monthly raffle, as about half the members prefer that scale for aircraft; the other half are distributed amongst the remaining scales or genre. If there was a new-ish 1/72 it would go into the raffle as well. I may keep the few that are not festooned with rivets, as the moldings are very crisp -- these appear to be near first run plastic. The rest I've already received an offer for the lot from a member here. In a few weeks after the above is completed I'll send him the list of the remainder and if he still wants them, they're his. The revenue will go to our pizza fund at the club (we do a pizza night on our anniversary). Regards, Tim |

I'll second Matt's comment, wouldn't hurt to throw up a list of what you have on here. There are several of us who WILL build particular kits from the classic era, depending on the kit. |

Sometimes, various organizations seek out modeling supplies for troops overseas. You might check with IPMS national, and see whether any efforts are currently underway. I don't think that a guy "in-country" would much care about the age of the kit, as it something to do to take their minds off the "day job" Ed |

Not in this one, no. I do have one in my personal stash that I've had for years...and I'll be getting one of these sheets now that I can do something new with it. Tim |
