Interesting points, I wonder if you care to explain the difference I see between shows here in Canada (Ontario mostly) and the US, are we late in getting the down turn?

I have never vended at a show in Canada. Some vendors that I know that have had to pay VAT tax, submit inventories when crossing the border into Canada, and again when leaving, paying taxes on the difference. Some breezed right thru without narry a question or paying a dime. So, I just take a powder and pass, encouraging them to see me at either the (now defunct) Erie, PA show or at a Buffcon Regional show (every 4-5 years usually, no the Sunday show).

To expand a bit on the downturn. I live in the DC Metro area. We are one of the few areas of the USA immune to the economy thanks to Uncle Sam. So the shows in my immediate area are always very good and why many vendors from far away come to these shows (Modelcon and Old Dominion Open) and keep growing every year. Traveling to other locals gives me just how areas are being affected. Good example: Pittsburgh show was marginal for years. It's close and could be done without a motel stay when I was a younger man. When the fracking took off in Western PA, Eastern OH, and W.VA, so did the sales. Yes the economy does effect sales, but I try to keep myself immune by offering items no one else has at competitive prices. This is how a company survives lean times. So many vendors at shows seem to offer the same stuff as the other guy. This results in price wars and I have learned not to get involved in. What good it it to "give stuff away" when you can't replace it to sell at the next show?

I have learned as well that certain venues seem to draw those who are "cheap" and only looking for bargains, and those who appreciate quality items at a fair price. That's my target customer.

Where in the DC metro area? (Otherwise known as the pit of hell ) My wife's whole family is in MD just south of DC and I am up there every few months.

Over the mountain west of DC in VA. As the water flows and winds blow from west to east, it keep the contamination down with a natural barrier in between.

Next year, schedule your visit around the end of April and visit one of the best 1 day Model Contest and shows in the USA.

If you find yourself in the area on any third Thursday, feel free to drop in at the Pax River Museum at about 7pm. The Southern MD Scale Modelers meet, talk about models, then a few go grab a dinner locally. Usually 15-25 members show up, no competition, but we do hold a raffle and vote on best theme model.

More here.

I'm a "green shirt" because I work on the carrier's flight deck and maintain US Navy aircraft. Safe sorties are my life so we can be anywhere, anytime -- from the Sea.

That's always the way once competition is introduced, into a hobby or anything else. People do take competition seriously, especially at the National and International level. Given the high level of modelling on show at these shows, it is necessary to get downright picky to find one that is better than the others. The solution for me, and I would guess for you, is to avoid the competition altogether, at least until the dust has settled. There's plenty of people around at the SiG and Branch tables willing to have a laugh with their modelling.

If you want young slim fit hyperactive extrovert people, then no, you won't find them modelling. However I did take my daughter (young teenage at the time) to a couple of shows and she enjoyed being with the members of my local club. As I was to discover coming back from a wander around the show, she also liked the Calvados IPMS France were sharing around.

In the US there are a number (maybe a dozen) of NNL shows around the country which are primarily display only. All are automotive themed to my knowledge having evolved from an Ohio based car model club's frustration with judging and the contest mentality.

I am not aware of a similar event for non-automotive models.

OK, help out an ignorant old man: what is "NNL"?

PS: Sounds like a great idea for a show.

Up here in the Northwest, we have a show that falls in February at the Seattle Museum of Flight. It is non-competitive; ie, display only. Haven't been able to attend for the last couple of years, but it is normally well attended. People really empty out the display cabinets and bring a lot of stuff. Others on this board might know better numbers, but I want to say that the last time I went the count was over 1000. I personally think it is a great idea.

But what we really need is The Museum of Scale Aircraft Modelling. A permanent facility that would display models. All sorts of model railroading organizations do this. Plus there is a Mustard Museum for heavens sake, so the idea of a model museum can't be too far-fetched. Soon as I win that Lottery...

I will have to do that. I've been to the museum before and have family that works on base.

BTW, our club also meets on the Third Thursday, as it did last night. Lots of clubs seem to meet on the third Thursday. Wonder why that is so popular?

There was a museum of modeling for a while in St. Joseph, MO, that was associated with VLS. I've always thought there should be one.

Don't tell me you live in the Shenandoah Valley, also known as heaven on earth. The most beautiful place I've ever been. One reason I'd like to see DC nuked is that it would prevent the spread of it into the valley.

30 years ago Manassas was a wonderful little town. Now it has been swallowed whole by the DC monster. I'd hate to see the same thing happen to the Valley.

Resistance is futile; you will be assimilated.

In all seriousness, the I-95 corridor will grow faster in length. Richmond will be a suburb before the valley. Already one big megalopolis from Fredricksburg to Boston.

A few years back the count exceed 2,000 models. I can't remember last years count but I think it was right around 1,200.

Ergo why, in 1986, instead of attending the 125th 1st Manassas as participants, SWMBO and I decided to use our time off to take a history vacation in Northern Virginia since even then it was rapidly disappearing at such a rate.

Glad we did.

There is one in McMinnville Oregon too, at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum that is supposed to be well attended.

I've wanted to go for several years, but it is in September which is traditionally still a very busy time at work for me.

Aaron: IIRC the McMinnville show changed location this year, from the Evergreen Museum to a local tank museum. Wasn't able to go due the fact that it fell on the weekend after a big road trip vacation, but it was always fun on the times I was able to go.
