For some reason the oils on my hands cause problems with paint. I wear gloves as soon as I get into the major assembly phase. I also have a tendency to run toward the finish line once the paint is on. In fact Jim Bates and I were recently discussing that issue and whether or not the patience and the end separtes the great modelers from the good. |

I too vote for enamels. Since 1970, the only times I've ever had paint lift was when 1) I didn't wash off the mold oils before beginning the model (use DAWN dishwashing liquids -- all dish soaps are NOT created equal when removing oils! 2) Used mixed types, ie. lacquer over enamel, etc. 3) Definitely drying time. Some paint take up to two weeks to really harden. Even with enamels, I allow at least overnight per each coat/ I DO wear cheapie white cotton gloves after the paint goes on, for the rest of the build (I shoot a lot of NMF). Lastly, build a paint booth. You can use an appropriate-sized cardboard box (preferably heavy duty), with one side cut away. Use the smallest, cheapest bathroom blower fan you can buy (NOT heater fan) THIS MOTOR MUST BE NON-SPARKING, ie. "brushless". Mount it to the box with Gorilla type duct tape. Use a short length of flexible duct hose, and stick one end onto the motor outlet, and one end into a hole cut into another thick piece of cardboard (or foam or wood) that fits into the window's opening. Voila! Instant cheapie paint booth, no more fumes! (At least in summer...) The more you practice, the better you get. Good luck, ED |
