Friends,

I have now joined the growing numbers of frustrated Photobucket users. I recently posted images of the Trumpeter Su-24 Fencer in the "Photos of Completed Models" section. A friend went to view the topic and informed me that the pictures did not exist. Knowing that the pictures were indeed posted, I went back to the discussion and sure enough, the pictures of the Fencer were gone. ( Argh! ).

I read in the corresponding topic on this site that Postimage and Flickr were the new websites of choice. My initial foray to the websites have proven a bit confusing and any suggestions on how to get regular sized pictures to post to this website ( topics ) would be greatly appreciated.

Respectfully,
Mike………….."Sky Keg"

Mike,

I tried Flickr, and have a few posts here, but decided to switch to hosting my forum photos on my Blogger site in a draft post. It is free, no ads, appears to be no limits, and I can just copy the link from the draft blog post to here with zero issues.

I'm using a Mac, so your mileage may vary...

On Flickr, I sized my photos to "medium 500 x XXX" as that appeared to look right to me on the forum here. Option is on the Share Photo dialog box, BBCode option. I copy, then past here in the draft and then edit the post to remove all the Flickr BS. All that is required is the text between the img and /img tags.

On Blogger I upload my photos to the draft blog post, using the default settings for sizing and position, as it doesn't matter given I'm copying the location anyway. I then find the src="https://
Code:

.jpg" and copy/past to the draft post here. Then I remove the src= and quotes, replacing them with img and /img (in braces []). Lastly, I replace the "s320" with "s640" as that sizes the photo to double the default width here.

As I go forward I'm going to create a faux blog called "Forum Albums" and each faux post will be associated with the respective forum here that I post a photo to. That way I can find them easily, and call me crazy...maybe add the text as well! That way I've got a sort of record of my postings (I currently archive in notes which makes it easy to review while mobile). My only risk with using Blogger is when (I'm not assuming "if") Google decides to stop supporting Blogger. When that happens I'll either switch to paid hosting, another free option like WordPress, or give up.

Simply switching to another photo hosting site is not a solution. What would prevent the new host from "pulling a PhotoBucket" and deleting all your pictures too? Tim may have a (partial) answer with services like Blogger. If you think about it there are several players involved in getting a picture to appear on a forum and we will have little say when any of them change their ToS.

One of the things I will use is similar to Tim's idea.

Except that I am using Wordpress more these days, instead of my Blogger account.

I also have my own Invision forum that lets me upload and then link to the photos for other people's forums.

For what I want to really do with the Web, text is still more important than photos,,,,,,,and if my choices of hosts "pulls a PhotoBucket",,,,,I will just stop completely with photos online.

I have no intention of chasing photos from site to site someday,,,,,,the PB deal was enough for me.

One exception is that I am perfectly fine with paying someone a *reasonable* annual amount for photo hosting,,,,but if they try to charge a "PhotoBucket" amount,,,,,well,,,I will just build and keep it to myself.

As I have said very many times on forums,,,,,,,,*Model Building* is my hobby,,,,,not Photography.

Rex, you're right on. And Jeff, that's why I'm moving my meager flickr postings to what should be a longer term solution, albeit I still view that as interim so long as it's free.

Online storage should be both cheap, and static for users like us. I can see why a free hosting service doesn't want permanent links, it forces them to statically manage the space which even if automated takes resources. In their drive to minimize resources and costs when offering a free service, we become relatively expensive outliers.

Moore's Law is still applicable even in today's cloud solutions. Set a fair price for static hosting and it's near 100% likely that for the same price next year I can get twice the capacity. So unless I'm growing at more than 2x in number of photos per model per year, then my hosting service will make the same or higher profits off me every year while I get more capacity as my needs grow, but without paying more.

That's why I see Blogger as interm, while also a longer term option. Google is making money off the traffic to my blog in the background (I'm not as I turn that front end stuff off) but they may choose to change that business model in the future. If their price is reasonable for the new TOS, I'll stay and pay...

Hi, I don't use anything other than a iPad or iPhone - I tried pb but couldn't work it out and now it doesn't matter anyway. Any suggestions on an easy (or more user friendly) option for me?
Thanks

Tommy, I've yet to find an iOS app that both easily uploads to a hosting site and supports permanent links for hosting on a forum or BB. I've even tried forcing the same hosting options (google, Flickr, et al) in a web browser with but suffering challenges in cut/paste just not working reliably, if at all.

Sheesh, even using my iPad for posting text only can sometimes be a challenge. But I press through.

So simply walk up to my home office and post from there, gets me a few extra steps in. ^_^

What I am doing is rather klunky. Take the picture with my iPhone and email it to myself. Then using my desktop, open it wn MS Paint, resize it as needed, save the new size and then upload it to Postimage using Chrome, not MS Edge

Tim and Chuck - thanks for the info and advice. I'll have to try and resurrect my old PC and go from there. Hopefully I'll work something out.
Cheers

Absolutely nothing, although to be clear, Photobucket haven't deleted any images, they've blocked third party hosting (so far). Don't get me wrong, I think it's despicable from the point of view of the amount of web resources and reference material they've effectively destroyed almost overnight and without warning, other than with what amounts to a ransom demand. Anybody that's offering free hosting could change their mind and there's very good reasons why they might do so. If you want guaranteed hosting your best bet is to buy some web space and do your own hosting.

Why the Rube Goldberg approach? You can resize images as you upload into postimage. And you can do it from your iPhone.

That is correct. The days of free web are coming to an end. This is both good and bad.

But servers cost money and with the amount of stored data growing exponentially, it's costing more and more to host.

Buying a small bit of webspace doesn't cost much (caertainly not $400). I'll be taking the plunge soon.

Bummer, thought photobucket forgot me because of the tiny amount of pictures I stored (and linked) there. They just caught up and now my photo's and incredibly funny signature are gone.

My internet provider gives me a "webdisk", a sort of cloud service. I'll try to use that for photo hosting, but my computer skills are a bit rusty.
