Can o'worms this one, Mike Keeps artwork in the Ted Hooton article (SAM, Nov 1982) lists it as being black/white, but there are suggestions the fuselage may have been aluminium.

Photos of the wreck are inconclusive, could that be a paler colour under the "U" or just dirt and dust picked up in the crash?

Opinions most welcome!

On this website:http://aircrewremembered.com/gillies-j.html there is another photo that appears to show a light color on the underside of the starboard wing.

Given timing (too early for Sky), I'd expect the starboard wing underside to be white, port side Night. Starboard side of the aft fuselage is also a light color. Photo linked in below.

So the options are:
1) Night port, White starboard; demarcation down the centerline
2) Night port wing, White starboard wing, only; demarcation down the centerline with Aluminum fuselage and under the nose.

Modelers and profilers seem to favor #2; the picture in your link would make me think that as well, the underside is in shadow but there is just a hint of lightness on the port side.

Edit: speeling

I'm a "green shirt" because I work on the carrier's flight deck and maintain US Navy aircraft. Safe sorties are my life so we can be anywhere, anytime -- from the Sea.

The aluminium front/back shows up on some 602 Sqn aircraft in that timescale, so I'd say that most likely
