I got this is the Hasegawa P-47D decal sheet, but it has no instructions. Other than Pengie II, I don't recognize any of the other markings. Can anybody tell me what goes with what? If you have a scan of the instruction sheet, it would be extremely helpful.

Here's a little bit of info: Option 2, Pengie II is a P-47D Razorback (61FS/56FG/8AF) and is associated with the yellow serials to the right of the penquin art. The HV-M code may be incorrect for this airplane; I'll have to check my references at home. Option 1, "42" with the redbird is a 12AF airplane that was based in Italy, and would have OD upper surfaces. The yellow serials. I don't know if it would be a razorback or a field-camo'ed bubbletop (can't make out the serial to read) Option 3, 5F-E, is a 5ERS airplane (5 Emergency rescue squadron) with 8AF in England; the serials in yellow with "WW" underneath go with this scheme. OD/Gray razorback, likely full invasion stripes, cowl would have red/white/blue bands. Several photos of 5ERS birds online, possibly even this particular plane. Option 4 is a 9AF airplane, 356FS/358FG. Orange fin and horizontal stabilizers, red and yellow cowl bands, NMF bubbletop most likely. Option 5 is a P-47M from the 61FS/56FG. Unpainted undersides and wing/horizontal stab leading edges, red cowl front and rudder, flat black upper surfaces, unpainted canopy frame. Upper wing and fuselage sides would use national insignia with light blue borders (bottom of the sheet), lower wing would use standard insignia. Option 6 appears to be another Italian-based bubbletop in NMF; fin and rudder would be medium blue with the yellow lightning bolts. Not sure of the rest of the scheme. |

OK, I'm home now and have a bit more info on Pengie II. From Nigel Julian, Peter Randall, and Zbigniew Kolacha's book "56th Fighter Group, Part 1 - Kings Cliffe Kindergarten - Halesworth Heyday", Pengie II was coded HV-O, serial number 42-75224 (normal practice was to delete the leading "4" and the hype for the tail number, so the tail marking would be 275224). It had a red cowl band and red rudder, the fin and stabilizer theater ID bands were painted over with fresh OD paint, no invasion stripes, a white data block with red border for the crew names below the windscreen, left side, 14 black crosses with white borders under canopy, left side, arranged in one row of 10 with another row of 4 beneath it, and the penguin artwork on both sides was on a blue disc with the "Pengie II" below it arranged so it followed the curve of the disc. So, the decal sheet looks to be incorrect for this airplane (penguin artwork is the style used on Pengie III, which was natural metal finish razorback with the Hamilton-Standard prop. The tail number and squadron codes (HV-M) were black. |

Thanks Joe. The deeper I look into this, the more it seems that each of the markings options is lacking one thing or another. |
