Hi all,

Did a two day driving trip this week to Big Bear Lake, Arrowhead Lake, and finally on to Lancaster CA for the Desert Classic show/contest there yesterday. I managed a 1st for my P-40B, and 2nd for my Dewoitine 520 in Italian markings and finally a 3rd for the E15K1 Norm in the OOB category. This was a large category with all scales and types...I placed behind an armor subject and a 1/32 scale J7W1 Shiden...LOL.

It was an excellent show for its size. Very nice awards, (better than Nats last year), great raffle items, well lit and sized venue, easy parking, and a good number of well done, interesting models. They also stayed to their schedule...others could learn from this!

Here are a few pics...

Thanks for the posting, Joe... Those prototypes are great!

I wonder how the F-108 would have done had they made one?

I wonder how the F-108 would have done had they made one?

I think the actual plane would have made it thru Phase I and II Testing without a hitch, The fire control system would be delayed, the price tag of which would start to spiral out of control, and the plane would have been cancelled in the 1961-1962 time frame. Like the XB-70, there would have been problems with fuel tank sealing and back and forth on deciding what sort of fuel to use.

Remember the CF-105 Arrow got axed in '59. (The F8U-III lost out to the F4H in late 1958). The F-106A just barely avoided outright cancellation. ICBM development made interceptors largely irrelevant as the mission at least partially dissolved. Had the Russians fielded a credible Supersonic bomber things might have turned out differently, but looking back on things the Russians made the right call to focus on missile development.

As a long-range bomber escort, it would have been a continuation of the flawed concept behind the original F-101 mission. Unless the missile armament demonstrated 100% reliability, in a close-in situation the -108 wouldn't be able to fight out of a wet paper bag.

And there would be a loud wailing and gnashing of teeth. Mind you, project failure would not be the fault of the airframe designers, it would be the fault of the radar and missile integration guys.

Somebody no doubt will disagree violently with me and have me shot.

No disagreement from me, I just think it's one of the best looking delta winged aircraft evah!! Even if it never made it past the mock up stage.
