These are from the 13th annual Kalamazoo IPMS contest held at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo on 17 September. The event drew 383 entries from 108 modelers in 41 categories.

The club did an outstanding job with this event. There was a large raffle, the vendor's area was medium sized. Here are the pics!

Part of the entries in the Chosen Scale:

A nicely presented Academy B-17:

From the scratch/conversion table. I confess I have no idea what this one is!:

Hasegawa's SOC still builds up nicely after 40 years, and is supported by the aftermarket:

Love the Italian camo schemes, and check out the detail in the dorsal gunner's position:

The Scratch/conversion table. 1/72 is well-represented here:

A nice Academy P-51 in the Tuskeegee Red Tails scheme. This model took a first in it's category. Can't wait for the movie!:

Great paintwork on this MSI:

Finnish markings on this MS, a clean build:

A beautiful MiG-15, check out that paint!:

Who says WWI aircraft didn't wear camo? Outstanding autum leaf scheme on this Lloyd:

I love the IAR-80, and this one looked terrific:

My poor photography skills do not do this D.H.2 justice:

A great job on this Demon:

Time spent modeling is not deducted from your lifespan.

I spent most of my money on beer and women. The rest of it I just wasted.

The Air Zoo itself is worth the visit if you're in Kalamazoo. They feature several flight and space simulators. Naval aircraft are well-represented (the "cats" in the zoo). More than 50 aircraft in total, well-preserved and well-presented. Surprises for me were the Curtiss Ascender and the Blackbird trainer with the raised second pilot position, both of which are unique.

What better "base" for your 1/72 scale carrier aircraft than a 1/72 aircraft carrier? This one is really unique, it represents the USS Wolverine, one of two Great Lakes steamers converted during the war to carrier qual Navy pilots (the other being the USS Sable). Neither had a hanger deck, the aircraft recovered to shore stations. What makes them unique is they featured paddle-wheel propulsion! Several USN aircraft lost during this wartime training have been recovered from the Great Lakes, and are well enough preserved to be restorable.

Please forgive the photgraphy here. I was shooting through plexiglass with a pocket camera, and the light was not the best.

The Tuskgee P-51 was Steve Nelson's. I saw it yesterday at Cinci. It was very nice. Took first in it's split of the 72nd single engine prop a/c category. Very nice.

OK, so I just noticed this thread..sorry for being tardy. The Mustang is indeed mine..thanks for the props, guys! I took it to the IPMS Naitonals, but it didn't win anything. It almost got left behind in Omaha..I was so excited about winning a couple of things with other entries that I forgot to pick it up from the tables after the awards banquet. Fortunately the show staff locked it and several other "orphans" up in an office at the hotel, and I remembered it before we headed out the next morning.

The 1/72 aircraft carrier is the USS Wolverine, totally scratchbuilt by Bill Waldorf. Wolverine and her sister ship Sable startd life as side paddle-wheel luxury steamers used as luxury cruise ships on the Great Lakes. They were purchased by the USN during WWII and converted to training carriers, based out of Chicago and operating on Lake Michigna. The ships were converted in just a few weeks. One of Bill's biggest challenges was finding decent drawings..much of the conversion work was done without any real design or documentation. His finished model is absolutely stunning. Bill recruited several of us in the Grand Rapids IPMS club to build aircraft to populate the flight deck..I contributed two SNJs and the SBD. The Dauntless is in the markings the Air Zoo's SBD carried when she went over the side of Wolverine in September 1943. The aircraft on the deck are representitive of the various types that operated from Wolverine during her service..you wouldn't have seen all those different types on the ship at the same time. Here are a few pics of the model at Bill's house before it was encased at the museum (he held a little "unveiling" party for those of us who helped in the project.)

Cheers!

Steve

Hey inchhigh - thank you for taking us along

and don't underrate your photographic skills - the pics are superb considering the usual problems when trying to document exhibitions and contests !
