I am also confused, the BM review implies the GR 1 is a PBM-3C but with British markings, at least that is what I got from a quick reading. Decals I can manage, but what else would be needed to make a -3 from the Minicraft -5A? |

This is my understanding of PBM-3 models (modified from various sources). I can't see any parts you need for pretty much any PBM-3 that aren't included in the combination of kit plus GR.1. If you have a specific question about one you want to make post a picture here and I'll try and give you the best combination of kit parts and conversion parts.
To make a saleable USN PBM-3 conversion we would to supply decals and we don't see that we would ever sell 100 items of it, particularly as some people have already bought GR.1's with the intention of doing a USN one. PBM-3 (Model 162B) 1,700 hp (1,270 kW) R-2600-12 engines; 32 built PBM-3R (Model 162B) Unarmed transport version of PBM-3. 18 new build plus 31 converted from PBM-3. This is what the RAAF kit represents PBM-3C (Model 162C) Improved patrol version with twin .50 in machine guns in nose and dorsal turrets, and single guns in tail turret and waist positions. AN/APS-15 radar in radome behind cockpit; 274 built. PBM-3B (Model 162C) Designation for ex-RAF Mariner GR.1A after return to U.S. Navy. This is our GR.1 conversion. PBM-3S (Model 162C) Dedicated anti-submarine aircraft with reduced armament (2× fixed 0.50 in machine guns in nose, single machine gun in port waist position and single gun in tail turret) and increased range; 94 built as new plus 62 conversions. GR.1 conversion plus kit nose transparency, no upper turret. PBM-3D (Model 162D) Patrol bomber with increased power (two 1,900 hp (1,417 kW) R-2600-22s) and increased armament (twin 0.50 in machine guns in nose, dorsal and tail turrets, plus two waist guns). 259 built. |

You need the original kit and the GR.1 conversion so it's no more pricey than doing a GR.1 unless you get custom decals made I guess. |

Essentially true but 3B not 3C (see above, both Model 162C). You need a GR.1 kit plus markings. |

If anyone wishes to follow this up when GR.1 is back in stock, join our mail list and I'll make sure we send one out when it happens. What often happens is that just a few essential parts are the limiting factor on producing more sets. |

We have just re-stocked out shelves with a few GR.I conversions. So, to make a PBM-3 you need the Mariner kit and this conversion set and you need to cobble up some decals yourself. The markings were mostly fairly basic, A reference book (Squadron-Signal, or even better, the Ginter book) is strongly recommended. if you need more help contact me. We have become, faute de mieux, Mariner "experts". |
