Last I heard, it was slated for 2017, but have there been any announcements about when in the year?

I'd like to build a Sunderland this year, but don't want to screw around with Italeri's silly pillow-top surfaces.

Well, we don't know that Special Hobby will be better than Italeri. But I'd love to find out it is--that's really the only reason I've held off on the Italeri kit.

I've seen test shots, so it must not be too far out.

Thanks, Paul, that was indeed where I had seen them. I should have remembered since I stop by that site most every day.

Based on photos in Walrus' link, it looks a great deal better.

December 2016 photos of the Sunderland fuselage tooling moulds just having been galvanized:

We would like to have the model released by this summer, but unfortunatelly I cannot assure this date, so take it with a pinch of salt.

Very sorry for the delays with the Sunderland, we know that you have been waiting for this type for so long.

Thanks

That break in the hull at the step of the planing surface is interesting. It looks like they are allowing for a Mk. I/II hull.

I recall seeing some CAD images (I believe) when it was first announced that looked as if you could also do a late Mk.III with the fixed bow guns, 2-gun nose turret etc They even provided for the window change in the bomb-bay doors - 3 portholes as opposed to the 2 of a Mk.V.

If the kit proves to be a (late) Mk.III/Mk.V, it's great news for me, otherwise I'd be faced with re-working the Airfix kit.

Re: The late production Sunderland Mk III, I believe you are confusing with
the Mk IIIa

Early/Late production Sunderlands Mk III's, essentially same aircraft with some
modifications.
Retaining FN Bow turret with VGO 303 for both, slight differences in
minor equipment in interior of aircraft. Retained Mk II ASV Aerial arrays and
ASV suite on flight deck
Differences: addition of forward firing bow guns (UK based aircraft only)
starting of deletion upper turret.

Mk IIIa - new FN5B Turret with twin 303's in bow position as in this photo link
from front page of Seawings site, as well as fixed forward guns
http://www.seawings.co.uk/

Addition of Mk VI ASV pods under wings and newer ASV suite behind second pilot
Mk IIIa could have either 2 or 3 porthole Bomb bay doors.
Deletion of upper turret also in some aircraft

Alan ...

Thanks for the clarification. The IIIa was indeed the version I was thinking of. Now, if the Spedial Hobby Sunderland is to turn out as only a V, what are the external differences between a IIIa and a V?.

I'm hoping to do a 423 Sqn. Mk.IIIa and the new Sunderland would make that chore a bit easier.

Scott.

Hi Scott,

The Mk V and Mk IIIa airframes were mostly identical externally, with
the exception of the beam guns on the Mk V just aft of the wing trailing
wing, and the addition of the P&W R1830 engines, and the HS Prop hubs .

To modify from a Mk V, you would have to add Bristol Pegasus Mk XVIII engines
which from the sprue shots are in the kit - hopefully SH will do like their
other kits and have those parts there anyway. (see link last photos)
http://www.72news.eu/2016/12/special-hobby...d-mkv-more.html

Remove/Blank off the Beam Gun hatches.
Add the Mk III props (all Sunderland Mk's had the 12'9'' props) which again
hopefully will be in the kit.
Depending on whether your particualr Mk IIIa had an Upper turret or not, there is provision in the kit for with turret and I believe a hump with out.

The other issue is internally. The rear decking of the Mk V and Mk III/IIIa differ
in that, in the Mk V a portion of the rear deck is narrowed between the
beam gun postions see my photo below

I haven't seen whether SH have included a rear deck, but the Mk III/IIIa should look like this (I have a Mk III manual with drawings)

Posted Image

The FN Mk5B turret and ASV pods should be in the kit -though be interested
to see SH's rendition of the Mk5B turret, in how faithfull it is to the real thing.

The flight deck will have the same ASV suite both Mk IIIa/V as in this photo

From The Mk III manual (though depicting a Mk I/II aircraft) the ASV suite and how it looks with Black out curtains
Posted Image

Depending on how accurate you want the interior to be you can add more if need be,
though the radio suite is pretty much spot on in the kit.........

Hope that helps?

Regards

Thanks Alan. That was very helpful! Now to see exactly what the Special Hobby kit contains in the sprues, then start looking in the parts-box or cross-kitting if needed.
