I for one look forward to buying one of these when they become available ! Just wish you could buy the resin parts seperately to use with other Helldiver kits.....hint, hint... ;)

We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

I for one am very glad to see this one coming.

And for those who mention the -1 version: I too would love to have one of those, but the SB2C-5 served with several NATO countries postwar, which probably explains the selection of the -5 variant.

There seems to be a majority of comments lamenting Special Hobby's choice of the -5 over the -1 here. I'd like to help adjust the balance by thanking SH for their efforts in producing this conversion. I feel that any new kit, conversion, detail set or decal sheet that a manufacturer takes the time and makes the investment to offer us, the modelling community, is well worth our thanks and appreciation.

As an Aussie, the SW Pacific and SEA theatres are always of prime interest in my modelling and I therefore agree that a -1 from SH would be great, but the -5 is equally welcome!

Prior to relocating to Laos, I had little interest in the Indochinese wars (or French aircraft) but having now started a collection of aircraft operated in the region during that era, the -5 conversion from SH will be on my shopping list. Several years ago, I bought an Airfix kit for this purpose but it remains unbuilt & in the box, as all those rivets, dags of flash and chunky details have put me off it.

So thanks again, Special Hobby. Though I do agree with Scott that the conversion parts as a stand alone item would be nice... I already have 3 or 4 Academy SB2C's in the stash.

Cheers, James.

Well said.

Academy's kit was certainly welcomed when it came out, and seems to be the best SB2C in our scale, so it's especially nice to be getting a -5 based on the same kit.

I don't dispute the preferences stated for -1/-1C kitting, and I'm not about to speculate on the business decisions settling on the -5. I think of it as black magic, which sometimes offers me a beautiful princess, and other times a frog. Because, as it happens, a princess would be nothing but trouble these days, and I think batrachians are pretty darn cool. I'm more about the airframes themselves and how they look and perform, and rather less about connections to actual campaigns, so that undoubtedly colors my interest.

The bottom line for me is that it's always a good thing to see a well-done kit of a variant of any type that hasn't been kitted so well in the past, and that's what this kit seems to be.

Adjusting the balance of comment in a thread is fine by me. Good for you. It isn't a subject that appeals, although I gather it is a rather nice kit and the possible range of markings does offer some interesting options. However, I wouldn't extend that to thanking every manufacturer for every product that they make. As a rather elderly modeller, now definitely on the old fogey side, I've had enough of ill-researched lumps of plastic masquerading as specific aircraft. I'd also extend that to conversions, detail sets and transfer sheets.

Consider this as balancing a comment in a thread.

Way back when I too bought the Airfix kit, then Matchbox a few years later also did the SB2C, I think it was the -1C version but don't really remember. What I do remember was discovering that the Airfix fuselage fit comfortably inside the Matchbox fuselage!

Fair enough. I don't rate myself as elderly (54) but I have been modelling since I was about 4 or 5 years old so I know what you mean about "ill-researched lumps of plastic". For example, I would not be in line to thank Beechnut Models for any of their output! But these days, production of such monstrosities is very rare.

That said, I have picked up a few LF Models kits in recent years which are pretty crude by mainstream standards but at least they provide a sound basis for a 1/72 scale model of a few subjects unlikely to ever be kitted elsewhere, so I am thankful to have them. Sure enough, they are far from Tamiya or Eduard quality and require a more patient, creative and resourceful approach... but isn't this largely what the hobby is about?
