B-17 star-and-bar issue

Morning folks,

Long story short I boobed with the star-and-bar in the Airfix B-17 kit, the proportions are fractionally out. How did that happen?

I followed a line of research that suggested that - maybe - the ones on the B-17 were to a modified standard. Turns out that research was wrong and I repeated the error. My mistake and I'll hold my hands up and say it wasn't for want of lack of research or being sloppy, it's the opposite - I over-thought something and took a decision on inaccurate information thinking it was a hitherto unknown quirk, a bit like the differences of the modified star-and-bars on RNZAF F4U-1.

Why did I follow that line of research? Well sometimes you follow leads that throw up new info, sometimes markings don't follow the set patterns - for example on the upcoming RAF boxing of the B-17 there's a note on the layouts pointing out that the fuselage roundels were to non-standard proportions, just in case someone thinks the artist doesn't know what a C1 roundel looks like.

And it's not that I don't check things with people like Roy Sutherland, Lynn Ritger, Chris Bucholtz and especially Karl Hauffe who helped with so much great gen for Skyway Chariot and B-17 stencils in general. In fact Roy pointed it out to me some weeks back and, frankly, I can kick myself - I'd drawn the damn stars the correct proportions decades ago, they'd been used dozens of times.

The self-set bar is always held high when it comes to research, accuracy and completeness but sometimes stuff just slips through the radar despite the best intentions.

So yeah, my gaff and that erroneous star-and-bar artwork has since been junked from my library.

Thanks for the heads-up. That suggests that spares or aftermarket ought to have the correct star-and-bar. Can you recommend good alternatives?

Doesn't worry me because mine will be RAF 100 Group anyway but good on you for pointing it out.
With the best of intentions everyone makes the occasional mistake. The advent of instant communication has empowered a legion of whingers, most of whom live by the adage it's easier to criticise than create.
I assume that the red lines are the correct outline.

Mark, I beleive Fundekals do a sheet of star-and-bars. ;)

Ed, the Fortress III in 100 group markings is an upcoming release. The roundel and fin flash variations are interesting.

+ 1 !!

Jonathan excuse my question while I have you on the phone, are you aware that the Cross of Lorraine for the upcoming Blenheim Mk.IV bomber should be blue not red ?

OK, I'm confused, I feel as if the first post in this thread assumes we've all heard the beginning of this conversation, and I wasn't privy.

Jonathan, are you saying the stars & bars that come on the Airfix decal sheet are incorrect? Also, that you were the designer of those decals?

I believe the answer to both those is yes.

Yes and yes. As mentioned above, I followed a line of research that took me in the wrong direction.

Yup, the sheet will include both red and blue options and a note on the layout mentioning this.
