Hi folks, Here's another one of the older builds i dragged up from my dungeon. Only thing added to it was aftermarket decals from Aeromaster. This was only my second attempt at a three-tone scheme, and while it was better than the first i still wasn't totally happy with it. The intermediate blue is perhaps a touch too light, and the dark sea blue isn't dark enough. ![]() Those quibbles aside, its another one of those great Hasegawa sleepers you seldom see built up. Its got the classic oversimplified cockpit, but the fit is generally good although the sockets that take the wings are a crazy tight fit. Painting the canopy was easier than it looked; the turret was the hardest part. ![]() The only significant accuracy quibbles that it has are (and they are minor), the propeller is the earlier style seen on the TBF/TBM-1, and the cowl flaps are for the very late TBM-3E version. You can build the TBF/TBM-1 kit from the box and you don't have these problems. ![]() At the very end of the war, the Navy abandoned their use of geometric markings and went to alphabetical characters on the tails for air group identification. "RR" signifies USS YORKTOWN. Knowing what i know now about "Turkeys", i should have mounted at least some rocket stubs on the wings and added an exhaust stain, but C'est la Vie. ![]() Hope you likee. Comments and critiques are welcome. d-bot |

I like it, for the later prop I've raided a couple from the Tamiya Corsairs that come with both props as an option. I think Aeromaster had a resin cockpit at one time but it's long OOP. Aries also does a cockpit but I've never actually looked at one. |

Funny you mention the Tamiya Corsair. 25% of my Hasegawa F6F is Tamiya Corsair bits: R-2800 Engine Propeller Wheels Rocket Stubs Drop Tank d-bot |

I have the Aires cockpit but haven't used it yet. It represents a FAA Tarpon configuration with the third seat (discontinued on US Avengers). I will use it as a pattern for adding detail to the next Hasegawa cockpit. Seriously though, i'm skeptical of Aires cockpits. So much work is required to make them fit, that you have to destroy the fuselage in order to save it. I also got the white metal struts (Meh) and the resin wheels (very nice). I still want to do an overall blue TBF-1C from "Flight 19" and a TBM-3D to compliment my F6F-5N. d-bot |

I wonder sometimes why Airies lists a recommended kit as the cockpits from them that I've used would have fit any of the other available kits with similar hacking. |

I must agree with you that this is a very nice kit from Hasegawa. Easily the best of the pick in 1/72, and I can't understand why it just isn't generally available. Yours is built and painted very nicely indeed. Well done! |

Very nicely built Avenger. Hasegawa has had 2 releases of this kit in 2010. The first was a limited release and very expensive TBM-3S with resin conversion parts and decals for 2 JSMDF planes. The second release was a plain jane TBM3. I like your build Falcon. Nice colors and well executed. |

Thanks!! I think i can do a better job on the colours. Next time round, i'll open up the canopy. Personally i think it looks better with closed bomb bay doors. As for that TBM-3S2, i remember looking at pics of the special clear-cast resin parts. I wasn't impressed. Tim could do a job 10 times better with one hand tied behind his back. Gotta say, Hasegawa is very strange in their methods of producing and distributing kits. Maybe they have plans to do another limited edition, special-markings-release boxing. BTW, their SBD Dauntless is excellent too. Cheers, d-bot |

I think Hasegawa's business model is to mold a certain number of a kit and then release it in the initial boxing and see how it sells. If sales are good that release stays as a catalogue item, if not they re-release in special editions until the initial run is depleted and then tools go into "interval production. They seem to be a little wiser than the days when they would release all the versions of a particular subject over a 2-3 month period as that had to hurt short term sales. It sucks for us though as the 1 version they don't release initially is always the one I want to build. |
