A speculative scheme, not hypothetical:

The US Navy did briefly test a Whirlwind during the summer of 1944, seconded from the USAAF after it was sent over by the British to share current equipment. No photos exist in any US livery as far as I have been able to find out, so I did it up in GSB, as that was the contemporary fighter scheme.
