I have decals to make the famous Israeli black spitfire MK IXe, problem is I don't know where to start for a kit, should I go for one of the CMR resin kits, or can I convert a Mk IXc to do the job? |

I would start with either the Airfix IXc (or the AZ IXc when it becomes available) or the excellent Sword IXe. Good photos of the Black Spit are on the Internet and easily found, including some in flight showing the upper wings. You'll need to remove the cannon bulges in any case, as the photos will illustrate. If you go with Airfix, get the 3D Kits injection molded detail set for the broad chord rudder and prop. No need to spend major money on the CMR kits when you have some good injection molded stuff out there that just a little extra work will get you what you need. Note that unlike most Israeli Spits, the Black Spit had full elliptical wings. Hope that helps - let me know if you need any further assistance. Israeli aircraft is a passion of mine. |

I would second using the Sword kit, it already has the correct E wing. It looks as though the Sword and AZ kits are both influenced by the CMR kits and are very accurate. |

I thought the sword kit had the clipped wings for the LF version? |

The wings in the Sword kit are molded with the clipped tips, but elliptical tips are provided on the main sprue as well. As was the case with KP's kit, you have to cut off the clipped tips and substitute the elliptical ones. Hyperscale's review of these kits show the sprue layout clearly - Sword Spitfire IX and XVI Reviews Hope that helps! |

I've built many Sword Spitfires and I agree they are very nice kits. They do require a bit of work though, not exactly shake and bake. My one comment about the wingtips relates to the PR IV I did with extended pointy tips. Cutting off the short wing tip is fine along the outermost panel line; this leaves you with a butt joint to attach the new wing tip too. If you cut along the panel line just inside of this, your have empty space and the front/rear edges won't match up. The problem I did have was getting the new tip to stick! After applying putty and sanding the join (as it's not brilliant) I kept snapping the thing off. It's a funny kind of plastic. Love the kits though! Much more refined than Airfix. Very comparable to CMR of which I have built a couple, but sold my remaining stash as the price really isn't justifiable now. Simon |
