Hermann Graf's Fw-190A-5

I'm thinking of building Hermann Graf's Fw-190A-5. My question concerns the wheel wells and doors or lack of. After a little reading and looking at photos it seems there was a Fw-190A-4 and Fw-190A-5 in this scheme. The one photo I have where the inner doors can be seen I can identify as the A-4, in the one photo from a similar angle that I can identify as an A-5 a mechanic obscures the view of the wheel wells. Anyone have an answer for this as the various kits through the years have been presented both ways but it seems it could stem from mis-identifying the A-4 as an A-5. Also if anyone has a set of the Cooper Details high altitude cowl scoops that they will part with I'd be interested.

Hi Rus,

Whether or not a 190A had inner gear doors depended on having a Bomb/Drop tank rack.

The presence of a rack meant no inner doors because they fowled the tank or bomb.

Inner doors were deleted from the A8 and onwards but could be present on any earlier models.

Sorry, can't help with the intakes.

Hi Russell,

Your post triggered my memory of an old thread in the Luftwaffe Experten Message Board about Graf's 190's. You have to be a member to view the information (which is quite lengthy) but it includes quite a few photos of the A-4 and A-5. I can't see any inner gear doors in any pictures but I can't guarantee they're not there.

Neil Page also has a short article about this aircraft here:

By the way, did you know one of the Hasegawa Special Edition 190A-5 kits was a 'Graf'version which included resin intakes. You have to cut away the plastic to install them. I got mine a while ago from Hobby HQ here in Melbourne Australia. Maybe there are copies still floating around.

Cheers

Is my memory playing tricks or did the Academy Fw190 include those intakes? Not that's I'm otherwise recommending the kit.

Don't remember Academy including these intakes, but I haven't looked at this kit in quite a while. Heller includes tropical filter intakes in their kit, but not the supercharger intakes.
Life is too short for poor kits.

Building this was inspired by finding the Hasegawa kit in the "second hand" pile at tha LHS. This was the original issue AP7 with Graf's markings and doesn't have the intakes. A few years back I bought one on Ebay so I dug that kit out of the stash today and while it also doesn't have the intakes there were 2 full kits in the box (need to really check what's in the box when I buy something on Ebay). I've never seen that release of the kit so I'd be interested in seeing what the parts look like. It does appear that the A-5 had the doors so it looks like I'll be cutting the wing, anyone have a wheel well they recomend that fits well?

Russell - the resin wheelwell in the Sword A-1 kit fits the Hasegawa 190s like a glove!

Jeff, do you know if the AZ releases have the same resin wheel well? I have a couple of them tagged for my next Hannant's order.

I'm not sure, all I have is the Sword boxing. Let me know if it doesn't come with the resin and I'll fix you up.

Russ,

Yes the AZ kit has the same resin wheel well as the Sword and a passable cockpit as well and the early wheels.

Hey Russ,

I just happen to have the Hasagawa kit you want including the H/A scoops. I have no intention of building it as Graf's aircraft so if you have a similar A5 Hasagawa kit perhaps we could swap? :ph43r:

David, the photos I'm using are in the links Michael gave above as well as 1 front view that Robert sent to me. There seems to be some confussion over which one had the intakes with the "best guesses" going for the A-5. It also looks as though the A-5 did not receive the yellow cowl under the red flames until the intake mod. Lots of speculation but that's how I intend to build it.

I don't think I have seen that one before, but I don't specialize in Luft stuff.
