Looks pretty much like a MiG 21, not exactly state of the art. Likely to be a flash monster with cloudy transparencies and dodgy decals. peebeep |

Workable. Basically accurate in outline, but canopy is a problem. Use Pavla's canopy and interior set. |

When it came out it was the first kit of a late model Mig-21 and the first to really capture how petit the aircraft is. As Larry said the outline is pretty good but surface detail is raised line and rivets. Like most KP kits of that era small air scoops are separate parts and the instructions were weak on exactly where they are to be placed along with having to remove a few rivets so they will sit right when you attach them. Landing gear and wheels weren't very crisp and mold mis-matches were common. All that being said if you want a few for paint schemes it's not a bad kit and usually pretty cheap. |

Thanks everyone! This is why I asked. It was sent to IM for review. I'm wondering how I can build it without removing too much of the raised detail - and/or how I can replace said detail when sanded due to seams. Ideas? |

Matt, I spent the time removing all the raised lines and rivets and rescribing the whole shebang. Considering how much of that raised detail is lost ANYWAY (especially with the upper spine area and the wing roots), a good set of scale plans and a decent scribing tool is IMO your best option. The Aerofax MiG-21 book by Yefim Gordon or 4+'s MiG-21 book will do you well here. Both have superb scale plans and detail photos. Better yet, if you can, get both! I would be very interested in whether KP Models cleaned up the molds any, ESPECIALLY that ill-fitting and flash-prone canopy! |

Smash moulding a canopy this small is very easy. |

Russell: tiny point I know, but I don't recall the KP Mig21 as appearing smaller than the Airfix or Matchbox one. The Hasegawa (also released as Frog) was certainly way oversize but I don't recall the IMC Battle Damage one in sufficient detail to comment. The KP was certainly a very welcome kit when it appeared. It was followed by a Russian SMT (Mir: thank you Billy) which wasn't too bad, but then came the eagerly awaited Fujimi series, which were a crashing disappointment. I haven't looked at MiG21s since.... I've a box of part-completed ones - in the hope of living forever, can anyone tell me if aftermarket canopies are available for the F, UTI and later variants? Re raised detail on the KP kit - by all means remove it, but scribed panel lines look too large on 1/72 jet fighters. In my opinion. |

Graham: Yes indeed. Pavla has MiG-21 canopies for F, PF, PFM, MF, and U/UM. |

Friends, keep in mind that Eduard are indeed working on a 1/72 series of MiG-21s for 2013-2014 release. Those should indeed be worth the wait. Finally - a good Fishbed-J in 1/72 scale after all these years! |
