Greetings, I found the Hasegawa Fw 190A-5 Priller boxing at my LHS recently. As I'm a great admirer of Pips Priller, I would like to build his A-5. I know of only one photo of this bird, the one with him and the BMW auto in front of the aircraft. My question is about the wing cannons. Did this A-5 have the outboard MG FF cannons? If not, would it still have the underwing bulged panels? Or would they be flat? Inquiring minds want to know. FWIW, I note that Hasegawa is releasing a double boxing that includes options to build Priller's A5 and A8. cheers! |

The Hase A-5 kits that I have are not complete A-5's. If you're familiar with Hasegawa practice, you'll know what I mean. I don't think it has the early wheels for one. Of course you'll still have all the A-8 panels and such. Anyhow, probably words to the wise there... Now, a photo of W.Nr. 7298 in flight. (Don Caldwell "JG26 Photographic History..." Motorbooks) ![]() I don't see the outboard FF's... Have a look yourself. I believe since the FF equipped aircraft actually came from the factory without the outer guns (they were an "R" kit...), the presence of the typical underwing panel for "gun delete" is most likely. Here's the best photo of that panel I have. ![]() The thing in the leading edge is a "robot" camera. Anyhow, hope that helps a bit. |

As already mentioned, there are a host of issues with turning this kit into an actual A-5! As renscho said, there are quite a few panel line differences between the A-5 and A-8, if you need help with those sing out. One I will mention in particular is the odd panel line across the nose gun access panel near the front. This appears to be correct for some early A-5's (possibly this component was converted from the shorter A-2/3/4 type), but it is not present on the majority of A-5's and A-6's. I'm reasonably sure that Priller's machine did not have the outboard MG FF's, and had a flush panel underneath this bay, replacing the usual bulged one needed for the guns ammo drum. I don't know if this panel matches renscho's lower photo or not... Another interesting detail--very well illustrated in the first photo above--is that Priller's machine used a seldom-seen special light-weight drop tank rack, not the usual ETC 501. |

Ah, yes... the "JG26" rack. I can't recall ever seeing this fitment on aircraft from any other unit. The rack was included in a 48th scale 190 kit, as I recall. Possibly the Hasegawa one. If illustrations are required, I can dig around. I probably have some clear pictures of the rack in question. |
