Can't believe I made this model 28 years ago. Every once in a while, I stray from reality even without the use of drugs (at least I think so). This is my interpretation of the Vought Cutlass if suitable engines had come along in time. I took an already built Fujimi kit and "converted" it by adding a back-seat cockpit, vacuum-forming a new canopy, coving out the exhaust to hold spare J79 burners, adding splitter plates to the intakes and a Phantom I.R. seeker to the nose. I replaced the Cutlass' ridiculously long nose gear with a spare F-14 unit. The VF-111 Sundowners tail markings were made with paint and spare decals.

The photo(s) was done by FSM photographer Jim Forbes and is one of the first digital montages done back in the mid '90s. We shot the main image first with the jet sitting on the resin carrier deck section by Verlinden. Fujimi carrier crew figures populate the scene. Then I removed the landing gear and closed the doors to photograph the aircraft "in flight" on the break for landing. Jim "painted" in the exhaust trails and wing-tip-vortice condensation trails on the computer. We featured this shot and a story in an April (fools) edition of the magazine in the "History You Can't Model" department. I remember we got a letter from a crewman on Coral Sea saying he didn't remember the unit having Cutlasses at that time and was pretty sure they had Phantoms!

Always love it when a whiff gets mistaken for a real thing.

I did the Revell Me-262 in Israeli markings with the story that it was a Czech S-92 that was delivered along with the S-199s. While it was posted on Silly Week over on ARC I still get emails asking me where I got my info.
