A couple of years ago we FINALLY got an injection-molded Mariner kit (that wasn't a Mach 2 kit, anyway). It's a decent kit with a couple of problems. I suspect that someday the manufacturer will do a -3 wartime Mariner which will involve changing out the cowls along with those horrid props and cowl flaps, and a few other details. I think the reason they made the relatively rare -5A is that the only surviving Mariner is a -5A at Pima and that's what they referenced. One of the early -5As was still in its "tricolor" scheme when the "modern" red-bar insignias were applied. I like marking oddities such as this.

Nice looking Mariner Paul.

Minicraft have a -5 with beaching gear announced, not sure of the release date.

Is there much difference with a -3 and -5? I am not a Mariner expert by any measure.

Modelingwise, it's mostly the engines, cowls, scoops, as the -5 had the R-2800 engines, while the ealier -3 had R-2600 mills. The forthcoming -5 (not -5A) is likely to be the exact same kit as the -5A kit had the fillers for the retractible landing gear bays included.

Other differences among variants were turrets, especially the nose turret; some variants had no turret there, and I think the tail turret arrangement was different on some. But really the big difference is the engines.

I hope Minicraft will fix their props.

Nice looking model, Paul.

For those that like three tone schemes and weathering, this is a subject you can go absolutely nuts with!

I know the kit has come in for a fair amount of criticism, but myself i can't look past those Propellers and Cowl flaps. I don't consider myself a "Shape Nazi" but even i can look at them and say, "nope, they don't look quite right...."

Thanks for posting!
