Um Max, a square is a rectangle.

Oh lol I thought a squar had 4 equal sides and a rectangle 2 longer and 2 shorter ones :S

that's right, a square isn't a rectangle...

CHEERIO!

It's a type of rectangle...

it's like right triangles, they're triangles...with 90° corner.

Fine, a right triangle is half a rectangle. A triangle is half a rectangle or trapazoid.

Now can we change the subject?

I also like them both, sometimes is a soft red one very tasty and sometimes(more in the morning) are green hard ones better. Like Jonagolds and Granny Smith, but they sell apples fresh from the tree just outside the city ^_^

:o

Elaborate

You have a non-linear line with point A and point B farther to the right of point A. For simplicity, this is a positive parabola.

Now consider the coordinates of the points.

A: (x, y)
B: (x+h, y+z)

take into consideration this way of writing the difference in value between A and B:

since y is a function of x, f(x), we can say that

A: (x, f(x))
B: (x+h, f(x+h))

Now imagine a straight line connecting point A and B. The forumla for the slop of this straight line is (y1 - y2) / (x1 - x2) according to the f(x) functions this is:

[f(x+h) - f(x)] / (x+h) - x) simplifies to just h at the bottom

Now you have the slope of the straight line connecting piont A and B, but you want to find the slope of the parabola at point A, not the line between A and B.

To do this you must descrease the difference between A and B until they are the same, in other words make 'h' equal to 0, in other words Newton was a fucking genious. Notation for this is lim (h->0) aka 'h' approaching 0

So the final forumla for the instaneous slope of a point on a curve is:

f '(x) = lim [f(x+h) - f(x)] / h
........h->0

the dots are there to push the h->0 under the lim where it should be.
__________________________________________________________

Now say our function is x^2 and we want the slope at x=5

[(x + h)^2 - x^2 ] / h

We can't make h=0 or its undefined, so we rewrite the eqation until we cancel out the h at the bottom.

[(x+h)(x+h) -x^2] / h
(x^2 + 2xh + h^2 - x^2) / h
(2xh + h^2) / h
h(2x + h) / h
2x + h
2x + 0
2x
2(5)= 10 the slope at x=5 is 10

Of course there are other rules so you don't have to go through the whole thing, for example the power rule:

x^n
becomes
nx^(n-1)

so x^2 becomes 2x^(2-1) or 2x

I don't have to draw anything.

but drawing a tangent line is so much easier, but you know what, if you draw a tangent line, unless the slope is 0 or undefined, you can turn it into a right triangle, which can become a square or a rectangle, or both if its a square...

Like I have a TI - 83 graphing calculator lying around, we only get those when were learning how to use them in school, otherwise I draw a tangent and say "the ball is moving around 10 km/h, with 0 significant digits...
