wow i didn't know about that, pretty cool but yeah that's completely different. they're giving guns to people who have had military training, not to kids who could basically go on a killing spree any second. did you see that movie elephant? there's a difference between drugdealers getting killed and people walking into high schools with machine guns and killing everyone in their path. crime rate/homicide rate is relative due to this. |

lmao ^ that is true but unfortunately banning guns isn't going to stop people from getting them illegally - just like drugs. so like jack said, rather have regular citizens protected as well. but then again banning firearms would make it a lot harder for a teenager to get guns. still,, I don't like the idea of the military and police carrying firearms and civilians defenseless, especially with all the pigs here. |

That's responsible parenting. It's the parents', not the government's, responsibility to keep guns, knives, pools, cars, and all dangerous objects away from their children. Goodspeed's argument is based on irrational fear-mongering, which can only lead to nanny statism. |

doesnt put anyone in power. i'm just saying i don't think people can be trusted with this kind of equipment. most can, yeah, but some can't and if you ask me it's best to keep guns as far away from them as possible. besides, it's good that the police have such a significant advantage over normal citizens, makes it easier for them to uphold the law. i'm sure that in the US police are much more nervous in threatening situations because odds are high they are not the only one with a gun, and that can't lead to much good either. aaanyway i'm neither prepared nor willing to actually get into this in depth. agree to disagree. |

Legal gun owners in America seem pretty trust-worthy to me. If something is fine for most people, but should be banned because of an extreme minority, does this apply to knives, drugs, alcohol, violent video games, and so on? Gun rights don't exist so people can kill cops. They're mostly used for self-defense (cops can't be everywhere all the time, and the courts have repeatedly ruled it's not the government's/police's obligation to protect individuals) and hunting.I would not want the government to have an advantage over the general population at all. If you want that, feel free to take a look at Libya and Syria to see how it's working out. Government should be afraid of the people, not the other way around. |

what about bombs? legalize them too? heroin? there are some things people just can't be trusted with. people aren't perfect, you can't just give them the freedom to do whatever they want and trust them to do the right thing. the law isn't there for nothing, it's mostly there for security and it messes with our liberty. but it should, because what's liberty worth when the entire world is in chaos? besides, if people use guns to feel safer i can bring up the argument that i would really feel a lot less safe if everyone around me had guns.. in order to feel safe i would need a gun of my own, but i would also need to have it with me at all times and within reach. and then still i wouldn't feel as safe as i do now... honestly, i don't see what's so liberating about it. |

It's a matter of liberty. The fact you don't feel safe knowing there are armed people out there doesn't give you the right to deprive them of the best means of self-defense. And why would you feel unsafe? It should be quite the opposite. The overwhelming majority of legal gun owners are law-abiding, peaceful citizens, while criminals mainly get their weapons illegally. So, as the saying goes, if you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. Do you want me to post dozens of stories about how legal gun owners saved their and their loved ones' lives with guns while the police was nowhere to be found? Irrational fear-mongering, GS. That's the only argument against gun rights. |
