but to add to the topic: Do you know of Maslow's heirarchy of needs, dragon? An animals instincts are to survive. If the basic needs of an animal are not met higher level thinking won't happen. In other words you wouldn't be thinking about the morality of the A-bombs dropped on japan if you were starving in a desert. There's been plenty of cases where people resorted to cannibalism after a plane crash, religious or not. as for right and wrong in this sense, think of a moral landscape. There is in a situation decisions that would best lead to flourishing of all biological creatures and then there are decisions which would create the worst possible scenario to the flourishing of all biological creatures. So then there begins a continuum in which you start to see better and better solutions or "morally right" choices. Why would you kill another human? It doesn't help to flourish society. ^Thats an idea taken from the idea of a "science of morality" by Sam Harris in his book and theory "the moral landscape". He talks about how moral objectivity doesn't have to derive from god. Pretty interesting but a little flawed, but still good nonetheless. He also brings up a good point about why "God's" moral objectivity is obsolete. God tells us its a sin to lie. However, it doesnt take into account who you're lying to or why. So lets say you're hiding jews in your attic during WWII and nazi officers knock on your door, they ask if you're hiding any jews. God would say its wrong to lie in this situation. But in reality the right decision would be to lie in this situation. also cow was convinced the bible was actually the word of god written by god itself lol so as to say gods morals weren't created by man. If you think logically, and assume God to not be real as if you're an atheist, you can therefore assume that man created these morals themselves. Which means an atheist can live by the same moral lifestyle a religious person can. If an atheist agrees with the morals that is. Now cow would probably rebuke that an atheist should not listen to these morals if they were simply written by another man however, a truly moral decision cannot be made in fear of punishment or with promise of reward as hell or heaven would serve to a religious person. im bored

also there is a difference between the morals dictated by one's God, lets say Allah for example, compared to the morals dictated or set by another's God, lets say the christian god for example. So which one is right? How can there be moral objectivity if half the world believes their god's morals are objective and the other half believes their separate morals are objective? Case in point: moral objectivity can't be derived from religion. It takes a common human understanding in all of us, along with a humanitarian view to truly have something remotely close to moral objectivity. |

The picture is about moral relativists. This is often the case with them. |
