well im not talking about one night stands, im talking about actually being in a relationship with a girl thats a bitch or annoying or w/e but "hot" with her "assets". That's not even worth all the trouble of maintaining a relationship and you're just wasting your time. |

Inco got it right on his first post. Btw, don't confuse boring with mundane. You can talk about interesting stuff all you want man, but damn that's hard work. You should know that "things" are very difficult topics to be interesting with for a long time. Talk about you, or the person you're talking to. Talk subjectively, specifically, and non verbally expressive. Note: that is not a green light to flail your arms around maniacally, non verbal is mostly a reference to your facial expressions and enunciation. You can do the robot with your body, just not with your speech. Also, jam's not like abed at all. Well... they're both dark skinned I guess. Edited by _Saladin_, Jun 13 2011, 07:46 PM.

fear of being disliked. some have it more than others, like any other fear. i don't know why it would be hard to understand. |

Well, I understand being shy around people whose opinion (of you) you care about. But I don't understand why someone would be shy around everyone, to the point that it becomes a part of their personality. You should care about the views of people whose views you care about, but that's it. I mean, that's the best way to overcome shyness, I think.

well all fears are inherently necessary and a good thing, and present in all of us. but when you get to the real phobias it becomes unreasonable. people being afraid of heights or afraid of spiders to the point where it's unreasonable is very similar to shyness. i don't know if it's officially so but i would consider being overly shy as a phobia. viewing it like this makes it pretty easy to understand i'd say. |

I don't think shyness is fear in the same way as being afraid of heights or spiders. A shy person could be simply worried or cautious, or just a loner and uncomfortable around other people. I don't know. Everyone is probably not the same. |

People are shy from many causes. People who are shy get a 'fight or flight' response when talking to people or even just being in the same room with another person. And just like a fear of heights, it doesn't matter that you know there's no reason to be afraid. |

Jam, isn't it possible to overcome that? I've noticed the best way to deal with fear is to stare it in the face (figuratively speaking), as if there were no consequences to doing so. Of course this is too risky if your fear is related to snakes or whatever, but I can't imagine it's too hard when it comes to, say, shyness. |

Shyness isn't necessarily a fear. Some would label me as shy but I just don't interact with the majority of people well. No sense in talking to people if it isn't going to be enjoyable. |

I should point out that I'm nowhere near as bad off as I was two years ago or even one year ago. Within the past three years or so its diminished by itself, getting out of high school accerelated that, but I have good days and bad days of course. I took this test for how I felt when I had it the worst and how I feel now. I got 31 (moderate social anxiety disorder) and 19 (withing normal range), respectively. Exposure helps, but easier said then done without help from others. It's like telling a depressed person that they just need to look at the bright side of life; it would certainly help, but they can't. |

Shyness is the human adaptation to retain social dignity in a nucleated, nomadic community. Human beings have advanced faster than we have evolved, in such a way that technology has outpaced evolution. We continue preserve our tendency to be shy - we are most civil to strangers, even though it is their opinions that are least likely to affect us - although we have undergone an institution into immense urban communities, where an unfamiliar face populates every corner of the tepid concrete pavements. The fact is, it's a rudimentary instinct that is being confronted by contemporary rationalism. |

Jam , I got 21. Your score indicates that you may have mild social anxiety disorder. You should consult a mental health professional for further evaluation possible treatment. I'm not really afraid of talking to people really, it's just I have nothing to say to them. As far as making new friends at uni in a few years it does bother me, but I just don't feel a connection with the majority of people. I just don't know what to say to people to be honest. Andy get on msn, we have a game that I need to win, even after your attempts to get that korean guy to kill my mechanized infantry with his cavalry and rockets. |
