Lulz Security

And if those hackers started dying, it wouldn't be the same?

I believe most members of these hacker groups (Anonymous, the appropriately-named Lulz, et al) are teenagers and college-age kids who yearn for relevance and the feeling of power. They're not exactly assassination material. One visit from a cop and they'll piss their britches and stop whatever hacking games they do. It's about time someone did something about them, though. Especially that Anonymous group. I absolutely despise them.

Also, I don't know who said it here, but cyber warfare is serious business, and one of the greatest threats facing the United States. China has been playing around with cyber attacks on the US it for a while, but I don't think much has been done about it.

cyber warfare is really blown out. nothing really happens other than foreign gov. trying to view intelligence files. but guess how many people do that? A LOT. but they always report it as if its some incredible attack that took the smartest nerds to defend against. The firewalls alone stop millions of hacking attempts, only the sophisticated ones get through. but anyway anonymous is at least taking a stand against any organization trying to limit/alter connection to the internet, no matter how insignificant their actions are at least they're doing something

The hackers are anonymous; if a teenager is apparently murdered in a gang fight, it is not altogether the exceptional event, and I'm certain there would be no great difficulty in illustrating the execution in such a way. It is improbable that the media will be able to connect the perished teenagers to their online activities.

The group itself would notice that its members are dying, and would alert the media. The subsequent outrage from the general public would be unprecedented. Obama might even resign, although everyone would probably beg him not to, because then Joe Biden would be President.

Or, maybe, their friends and family know about their membership in the group, and would tell everyone if they suddenly died after messing with US intelligence.

My experience in internet relationships has impelled me to understand that the questionable inactivity of a friend will always have a cause that I can never be certain of. It is always exceedingly rash to presume that they have died, but there are several examples of friends, encountered through the internet, who have engaged in a rather sudden disappearance.

Besides, it would be disdainfully foolish in the CIA if they ever carried out the execution whilst making perceptible their involvement.

No, I mean they know each other personally (name, location, etc.) These groups aren't made up of complete strangers, I'd say. You don't hack into the CIA with someone you know nothing about.

And if they didn't know each other personally, their families might know about their membership in the groups, and they'd no doubt make it public if they suddenly died.

I would be vastly surprised if my family knew of my internet activities beyond the name of my facebook account.

That's because you're not a member of a group that conducts cyber attacks against governments.

And if I was, I would decide to tell my family about it because they're 100% ok with it?

You would tell close family members because it's serious business. Cyberwarfare isn't a game. pfff

If I hacked the government and stole sensitive documents I'd rather keep it a secret. What possible purpose would telling my mother serve?

I think unicorns have a higher chance of existing than gods do. I mean, if a mare fell into the ocean and a narwhal raped it, then the mare might just give birth to a unicorn.

See? I told you. I'm brilliant.

And you would tell close family members... because. OK, I suppose some would and some wouldn't, depending on what kind of things the group does.

I luv dem trolls lulz. Or well, checking out what they doing. As long as they don't seek economic benefits I don't see the problem. I didn't read any of your replies FYI.

Dragon maintains that they may do so with impunity, for public outrage is certain to be conferred by their execution or arrest.

..what? how does a kid getting arrested on suspicion of being a member of Lulzsecurity prove that he told family members?

No, I mean that I was right regarding that these 'hacker' groups are mostly teenagers and college kids.

By the way, I came across this article: http://www.news.com.au/technology/sophos-says-lulz-security-effective-as-schoolboys-boasting-about-imaginary-girlfriends/story-e6frfro0-1226076458883

Quote:

Which sounds impressive, but over at Sophos, Mr Ducklin said what Lulz were doing was "about as intellectually interesting and important as a bunch of schoolboys boasting in the playground about who's got the hottest imaginary girlfriend."

He said most of the break-ins had been "languorously orchestrated, using nothing more sophisticated than entry-level automatic web database bug-finding tools, available for free online."

While he admitted Lulz's behaviours was a "timely wake-up call", he insisted that didn't justify LulzSec's behaviour.

"Time spent throwing bricks through other people's digital windows doesn't actually teach anyone anything about glassmaking, glazing or civil engineering," Mr Ducklin said.

"If you consider yourself a hacker and you have time to spare, grow some moral spine and use your skills for active benefit.

"Follow the lead of a guy like Johnny Long and hackersforcharity.org.

"I dare you to look at his site and decide that LulzSec is a more worthwhile cause."

Oh snap! (rofly)

I can't imagine them doing any serious damage. But I've always been of the opinion that one of America's biggest weaknesses is cyber-warfare, so who knows?

its not a big revelation that the majority of people on 4chan and all of anonymous and such groups like lulzsecurity are young people lol thats common knowledge.

also like I said, the media vastly exaggerates these attacks and here's a perfect example of someone who knows what he's talking about saying what they really are: simple "hacking" tools available to everyone. But thats not as scary as:

HACKERS SHUT DOWN GOVERNMENT WEBSITE

The media rarely reports on serious cyber attacks (e.g. China). A hacker group that takes down PSN is interesting. Chinese hackers threatening US national security is 'meh' to the average Joe.
