Not really, and I was kidding with Jack about the Australian IP. I don't know why he took that seriously. Don't you follow the news, Richard? How many people in the country do you think know about China's cyber attacks against the US? Do you really think that's been reported extensively? http://www.defensenews.com/story.php?i=3830559 |

everyone here knows about them, even the ignorant high school kids here make jokes about Chinese hackers. and I do follow the news, mainly BBC which isn't even American and I read about it all the time. that's why I'm wondering if you live here because that was such a stupid thing to say. and since you dodged the question, I'm going to assume you still live in Bahrain. |

I did answer it, in my post after Andy's. Dude, I'm a politics junkie. I think I have a pretty good idea what national security issues are well-known in America. :P I'm talking about the in-depth things mentioned in the above article, not "Yeah, China's done some hacking." I don't think you deny that the average American doesn't pay much attention to many important political issues, let alone national security issues mainly discussed in the defense/intelligence communities and among analysts and political junkies around the blogosphere. Not much attention is paid to the cyber war between America and China, which is mostly covert anyway. Edited by DragonLegend, Jun 23 2011, 10:40 PM.

It's not 'fail' to to get fucked (cia.gov) by LulzSec. They apparently have a pretty good botnet, which in return gives them enormous DDoS capabilities. If anyone didn't know, DDoS actually just means overloading the server's ports with anything conveniant, and is easily done if you're bandwith is greater than the target's. Hell, if my neighbour had worse bandwith than I, I could DDoS them with my own computer. And if a server can take 300 connections a second, think on what happens when several thousand IPs try to connect each second for a longer time. That's right, the government gets fucked. The only way to prevent any DDoS is to have every single computer in the world 'safe', or having greater bandwith than all internet users together. And is that possible? No. I'm drunk but I think it was a pretty good post, just 20 mins ago I got a ride from this nice fellow after I passed out in the bus and woke up at some bus service station. |

I'm talking about more in-depth things than that. Read the Defense News article I linked to. Do you think the average American is aware of that? There are no polls about this, so all we can do is guess and use common sense. And seeing that according to Gallup's latest poll on Americans' views of other countries, China's favorable/unfavorable rating is 50/50, give or take, I find it highly unlikely that most Americans are aware of the extent of the cyber war between the US and China. China is an enemy. Patriots don't have a favorable view of enemies.

lol @ the favorability of cuba, how misinformed americans are. Judging by the clueless-ness of americans towards the rest of the world that survey is worthless. but anyway this is a stupid topic, based only on assumptions, however even though I'm more qualified to judge what my neighbors know than you are - I'm going to stop talking about this. also jack its because saudi arabia is known for its human rights abuse, and what, 17? of the hijackers on 9/11 were saudi i think. plus china still pretends to be peaceful. |

Richard, you don't have the facts to counter my argument, so, as always, you resort to your childish "I know the truth, but I'm not going to prove it!" nonsense. I asked a very simple question, "If everybody in America is aware of China's covert war on the US, and recognizes that China is an enemy and a threat, why do 50% of Americans have a favorable view of China? Do 50% of Americans have a favorable view of Iran, North Korea, the Taliban, a-Qaeda or any other enemy?" Answer that, genius. Ichi, maybe it's just Ireland. |

I never claimed what I said was a fact, by the way. I said the covert cyber war wasn't being reported extensively (and I've been following US politics with a passion for years; NYT, LAT, TIME, Newsweek, CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, you name it), and that it was highly likely the average American wasn't well-informed about it. I later reiterated this, and said that all we can do is look at other facts (e.g., China's favorable rating) and base a guess on them. But Richard, as always, resorted to personal attacks.

If I see cyber attack stories on national news here and even local news on TV there's a good chance a lot of americans know about chinas cyber war. Especially after wikileaks americans are paying a lot more attention to cyber news. The favorability rating is probably because china hasn't openly claimed to oppose the US, and everyone knows countries do shit to each other covertly all the time so its not taken seriously. Besides, it wasn't exactly 50/50 it shows that china isn't favorable to most Americans, plus that number will only continue to grow as china completes its first carrier and other military capabilities. besides dragon if my entire high school full of retarded dipshits knows about the cyber attacks I think I'm more qualified than you to assume the common knowledge of americans, especially since I actually live here. It wasn't a personal attack, get your head out of your ass. (that was) and besides there are no facts about this like I said we're arguing about whether or not americans know about china's cyber attacks. That's pure assumption unless there's an actual survey asking that exact question, not some favorability chart. |

- I know more about US politics than you do. - I too can make unverifiable claims about what real life acquaintances believe. Unfortunately, there is no way to prove this, thus it can't be used as evidence in an online debate. - Anecdotes aren't evidence. Your friends aren't representative of the general population. - You previously claimed that you don't watch the news. Then you claimed that you do watch the news, but only the BBC, which is, by the way, not American. Now you claim you follow the US media to such an extent that you consider yourself qualified to say what is reported extensively and what isn't. Conclusion - You: 1) Are lying; or 2) Have no clue what you're talking about and are arguing for the sake of arguing; or 3) 1 and 2. |

wtf are you going on about who gives a shit if you claim to know more than me thats not even relevant. A highschool of 1,000 kids is more representative than saying "surely they dont know about this because its a little complicated". its not hard to turn on the tv and read some headlines, or read headlines in magazines, or catch a glimpse of a newscast at the hospital or somewhere. Plus its on the internet all the time. I didn't say only BBC retard have you forgotten how to read? I said mostly BBC but from other sources too, and I know it's not american you simpleton. I said I'm more qualified because I live here and talk to americans on a day to day basis, see what other americans see, and I am american. Who is more qualified to say what Americans know: a kid in Bahrain who uses the internet or a kid in the US who watches some news and reads about in on the internet and talks to americans... so please stfu already you're annoying, what a stupid thing to argue about anyway |

You need to look up how they do statistics. A single high school in Pennsylvania is not representative of the general population. You said you didn't follow the media at all. Now you claim you catch "glimpses" of TV news and read a headline every now and then. OK. Do you honestly expect me to believe reading headlines and catching a glimpse of TV news makes you qualified to judge the extent of the media's coverage of any issue? To paraphrase Jason Statham, do I look like I have "moron" written all over my forehead? Why are you still rambling about Bahrain? I thought I already addressed that. Perhaps you should go back to that all-American high school for some remedial reading lessons. It's not stupid to discuss this at all. It is stupid to attempt to discuss it with you, however. lol wow do you know what a case study is? it would be illogical to question every single american. What they do is survey a number of people usually 1-2 thousand people (if its a big study) or less (if its more local) and depending on the answers they calculate the outcome if they surveyed the rest of the population. so yes, a high school is a far better model to represent the common knowledge of americans compared to simply ASSUMING which is what you're doing. It's not the best or most accurate but its better than any ASSUMPTION. when did I say I didn't follow the media at all? I don't remember that. Yes dragon I claiming everything I say here. I'm lying to you because I care so much for your opinion of me that I'm willing to lie about something as insignificant as news coverage in order to impress you. I never said I was qualified to judge media coverage, I said: "besides dragon if my entire high school full of retarded dipshits knows about the cyber attacks I think I'm more qualified than you to assume the common knowledge of americans, especially since I actually live here." thats only a few posts up too, I guess you did forget how to read. You said you were joking about australia, you never said you didn't live there. And its important I stress that because you seem to think you know more of what americans know because you saw a favorability rating compared to someone who actually lives here and talks to americans daily. It is stupid obviously, there's no strong evidence on either side. But anyway, here's some evidence: http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/thu-june-23-2011-bruce-headlam in this episode john compiles a video showing various different news media reporting on cyber attacks, its pretty convenient. pay attention to the names of the headlines. Even a comedy show is talking about hackers. |
