...pretty great, actually. Better than Empire was because units no longer have to go into unbelievably arbitrary formations just to shoot their weapons. Military units naturally replenish if under the supervision of a general and if in a settlement that produces their unit type. Units fight "smarter" too--yari (spear) carrying ashigaru for example, are armed with both their spear and short sword. By default they use their spear, but switch to their sword if they're engaging infantry. If there's any cavalry, they use their spears instead. In contrast to AOE 3, ashigaru in this game (including melee, gun and yumi variants among others) are total garbage--which is what they were IRL. Obviously there's some anachronisms--samurai are armed with one particular weapon depending on their type rather than a full complement of weapons, ninjas are the stereotypical all-black-wearing goons with tools of assassinations, etc. It's not the most realistic game EVER made but there's always going to be fantasy units. In terms of the general feel of the battle (and the look of everything) it feels much more authentic. "Clone" units no longer exist and everything in the environment is quite pretty--and it all plays big into how battles turn out (don't siege a castle in winter unless the odds are big in your favor). All in all it's worth trying out. |

I haven't tried that out yet. I want to get singleplayer pinned down first because it plays out differently than the other TW games. It's a lot harder to wage an aggressive war in this one without going near broke. |

I was looking at it on steam yesterday actually, and i was thinking of whether or not to get it. It looks pretty fun but i was pretty disappointed by ETW... I'll dl the demo i suppose and see how it is. |

After having been done out of my mind by ETW and Napoleon TW, I really don't have the conviction needed to attempt another total war game. |

The problem was that you could get rich by the 20th turn and pump armies out from cities with half a dozen army recruitment slots. It's harder in this game to get a strong economy and military at the same time very quickly, especiallly since taxation doesn't pay off very well and settlements at the beginning of the game only have 1 recruitment slot. |

I think you'd need a pretty strong laptop to run it. For a strategy game with the number of troops that it supports, the graphics are excellent on unit models and the terrain and there's a lot of effects that need system memory to run right. |

I imagine that, on the lowest settings, the game could be well sustained by an aged or otherwise powerless system, but of course the effect of the experience is diminished. |

you don't need a strong video card though. are you sure? it says fail when i do the test too because that site doesn't recognize my video card... just tell us what your card is (and processor) we're a much better judge than that site |

yeah low end laptops can only run 2D games. ![]() good thing there's aoc. ![]() the more i read in this thread the more i'm willing to give the game a shot, it looks nice. I keep wondering about how battles fight though. tbh i've never figured out how to fight in a TW game, i would just sort have my dudes attack and maybe try to flank with cav. or something. but lol. |

Seems like you don't have a graphics card at all; that's an integrated graphics device, which isn't going to have very good rendering power :\ |

The role of cavalry in Shogun TW is a lot different than in Medieval or even Empire. This game is a lot more infantry-based. Skirmish with archers, send infantry forward, get into melee, try to flank with heavy cavalry, keep general alive, send light cavalry in to chase down archers and routing infantry. Pretty simple stuff. |

i didn't realise that cav had a bigger role in the other TW titles (except for MTW where they were the best units iirc). still what kind of positioning and shit like that is needed to be considered? is there anything like that or is it really RI forward, pick shit off, engage with melee etc? |

It really depends on the situation, and the terrain. If you're defending on a hill or in the woods, it's better to keep heavy infantry forward and archers in the back, since their range matters less. On an open battlefield, it's a lot like I said, although again, cavalry (especially in the very beginning) is pretty poor for most situations. Yari ashigaru (which anyone can train at the start of the game) can easily kill a general's bodyguard 1v1 in this game unlike in Medieval, where spear militia lost to everything in melee except for cavalry archers and other spear militia. |
