Honestly? Frightening.

If I may say so, the baguette situation in France is become more perfidious at the hour. To get a very nice, fresh, tender baguette, you have to find a proper bakery that still uses traditional methods and doesn't use too many chemical substances. And do even speak to me of big distributors! Auchan, Carrefour (equivalent of Kroger or Biggs I suppose) sell the most atrocious pieces of extrusion you could ever find; the most sorry excuses of a baguette as I'd ever seen. It's incredibly insulting that the government even allows such loathsome devilry to be distributed in the first place. These kind of chemical sponges are exactly that. Press down on them and they'll compress themselves, sometimes without even making a crumb! Relieve the pressure, and the "baguette" takes its original form immediately. Like. A. Sponge.

I take my bread very seriously. Very seriously. In fact I've often times had fights with my dear mother, who comprehends absolutely nothing of the serious business that proper bread is. Many times (especially recently) she would bring us chemical extrusion, and each and every time I would flame her for doing so. My pride (and my stomach) will not allow it. I have refined taste in bread that it took a few years upon coming across the ocean from the USA to develop. It is of my opinion that the bread that comes from traditional bakeries (indeed, many bakeries produce disgusting bread these days) and from ONE large chain who has its own bakery at the entrance, l'Intermarché. For some reason this is one supermarket that seems to produce quality bread and the best one to get is the "Pavé Tranché", which is absolutely scrumptious the first day it's bought and still quite good over the next few days. Even most baguettes (the good ones) tend to dry up rather quickly, the Pavé does not have this fault.

I take my bread very seriously and news of this vending machine strikes fear into my heart.

It sounds funny but it's not. You have no idea how many times I've had rows with my mum on this one.

I'll have to agree with you. I guess bread from that machine is eatable but I won't eat it for my pleasure. Good bread is very important. But I never really have problems buying bread at a boulangerie in France, the only problem is too much white bread. So I try to eat some Pain Complet too or other kinds of bread in stead of baguettes and croissants only.

But I also have to admit something, since a month or three do we bake our own bread in the supermarket I work. And that bread is delicious(especially when it comes just out of the oven), even the baguettes are okay!

Ahh tasty. some supermarkets do have good bread, it's just that you have to find it amid the rest of the shit they sell

yes jam, we used to bake our own bread. but doing it here would be too time consuming especially considering there's good bread. i have rows with mummy because she buys shit when she knows perfectly well where to find good bread at a good price. it's ridiculous, sometimes i feel like my mother ought to have worked at microsoft

Yeah being Italian, everyone in my family (including me) takes fresh bread really seriously. Sounds like what's going on in France is the opposite of here: here in the US, a lot of small-time "artisan" bakeries are popping up, and people who are middle and upper class (not affected by the recession at all--don't care what news says, the only people hurting from the recession right now are the poor and lower-middle class) are putting these places on the map by buying their stuff. It's not that hard to find a good ciabatta or crusty sourdough loaf, but I don't remember ever seeing a French bakery around here. It's mostly an Italian thing going on right now.

we get bread every wednesday at the bakery. mostly a bunch of ciabattas as well they're delicious. we don't eat much baguette but if we do we get it fresh from the bakery as well. i don't take it all that seriously because it's been like this all my life and i consider it normal.

We get nasty whole grain bread from the grocery store. I'm embarrassed to have it in my house. :/ I make bread about twice a month and it's soooo good.

Rice is good too depending on what it goes with. Any kind of steak or broil with rice is really good, same if it's with grilled chicken.

Something with battered/breaded meat (like veal or chicken parm) is better with bread and pasta.

I've been eating rice as my primary carbohydrate since I was born, so I have a bit of prejudice for it. Dinner just doesn't feel natural without rice.

We never eat rice even though it is delicious.
