By 'ultimately meaningless" I mean that intelligence is simply another physical quality. It's no different than eye color or clothing style. You can have it, lose it, change it, improve it. All these things are temporary, and in the larger sense, meaningless. The only thing that never changes or dies, the only thing that matters, is the soul.
Intelligence comes from the physical, but it is not in itself a physical thing, and it certainly is different than eye colour. Eye colour doesn't ponder its own existence as far as I know. As for the last part I don't believe in souls and I disagree that absence of a soul means that there is no meaning in life.

Quote:

That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm not saying that we should give up our intelligence and become Jersey Shore-like characters. Intelligence is good and useful in this life. What I'm saying is that a person's ultimate value is not measured by their intelligence, just as it's not measured by their other physical qualities (and intelligence is physical, not spiritual, because it's from the brain). You're intelligent. If you suffered a brain injury and lost much of your intelligence, would you be a lesser being? Less worthy of Heaven? No, you wouldn't. When you look at the big picture, the only thing that matters is your soul.
If I lost much of my intelligence I would be less than myself. Let's start stripping away everything that comes from the brain. I lose my intelligence, my emotions and personality, my awareness, my senses, etc. I would not be the same person, I would not even qualify as a 'person'. If you agree that these things come from the brain then this 'soul' is hardly who I am and going to heaven would be pointless unless god has some supernatural version of my brain waiting.

Well, I already explained what I mean by intelligence being physical rather than spiritual, and how in a way it's no different than wealth, hair color, strength, and other physical things.

We can disagree about souls and the meaning of life, but I think you're wrong.

I disagree. By that logic, people with Down syndrome or anything similar are inferior. The mind as we know it is only useful in the physical world. There's no use for it in the spiritual world.

How do you know? You're speculating on a speculation.

The thing about this conversation that amazes me is that it's all wishful thinking and yet it's used to claim moral high ground.

Dragon has a point. If you can't say with absolute certainty that your senses are accurate then you have to accept that every reality you could possibly imagine is equally likely to be true.

I am not wrong about the fact that I find meaning in life regardless of being materialist.

People with Down Syndrome have inferior cognitive capacity, how insensitive. I may also point out with extreme indecency that the blind have inferior vision and that those with learning disorders are inferior at learning. Now with the highest disregard for human life I will also state that the brain dead are inferior at everything and will go as far as to say that I do not consider them people.

I was not questioning the first statement, I was questioning the second. I thought that would have been obvious.

If someone were exactly the same as you, in every aspect, but far less intelligent (in every meaning of the word), would they be inferior beings to you?

That doesn't change anything. I know the physical brain is unneeded in the afterlife the same way you know there's a computer somewhere near you.

I understand his point.

It's like saying, well your computer is the result of your senses. But it could be just something in your head. Maybe it doesn't exist. Kind of like in the Matrix. Interesting theory.

But believing in your computer's existence is more intelligent than believing in an afterlife. Your computer is palpable, you can touch it, hear it, see it, fuck it, etc.... An afterlife is nothing but an idea. What do you sense an afterlife with?

I think unicorns have a higher chance of existing than gods do. I mean, if a mare fell into the ocean and a narwhal raped it, then the mare might just give birth to a unicorn.

coincidence & luck. I almost got trampled by a horse once. a dog saved my ass, not God. unless God sent the dog, but somehow i've got my doubts.

He did it to convince you that he works in mysterious ways.
