CHEERIO!

As you guys may have heard, Age of empires online comes out tomorrow.

Now, there are lots of problems with the game, but there is a possibility of downloading a free portion of the game to try it out before paying. It doesn't hurt doing so and if you guys do it, maybe we can play together. Are you gonna give it a shot? There's lots of silly questing but the game itself is pretty nice

Looks like aoc but with worse graphics.
In battle, in the forest, at the precipice in the mountains,
On the dark great sea, in the midst of javelins and arrows,
In sleep, in confusion, in the depths of shame,
The good deeds a man has done before defend him.

From what I've heard, particularly from you, Incog, the gameplay isn't entirely appealing, either.

The game is fundamentally different. Different gameplay and graphics or not, this is not Age of Empires.

playing vs other people is good. questing for gear and leveling up is boring and sometimes it's hard but not in a fun way. it's also quite long. still it's worth trying out, considering it's free.

how so? questing and strange payment aside, the game resembles aoc much more than aoe3 ever did. I'd say it's something of a mix of the two, leaning towards aoc in terms of macro, which is quite difficult.

LoL-full game experience, don't have to pay a dime. Only thing you can't get without paying money is skins, which are fairly cheap when they're on sale.
AoeO-fucking $20 a civ. What the fuck.

Gotta go with Jack here about AoEO, but LoL sucks. Hard. Learn to play DotA newfaggot =) And "The game currently is scheduled for release in 2011" for DotA 2, which I will buy the second it emerges. HoN isn't good either, and it's fucking better than LoL, lol.

I'm not talking about the RTS gameplay. The game at its core is some sort of MMO RTS hybrid. That's not AoE.

I AM talking about the game play and that's the most important thing to consider when talking about a game. The core of the game, as you say, is how the game works when you're actually playing it, not in the game menus. When you do actually quest, it's pretty much like the single player campaigns. When you do actually play against other people it's like most of the other AoE games I've tried.

Yes there is gear and leveling and things that resemble MMO. And while it is unfortunate that you have to do silly quests to play competitively online, the game itself plays exactly how an AoE should play. It's sort of a AoC/AoT/Aoe3 hybrid when you actually play the game. The macro is difficult and is akin to that of AoC's, the micro is probably more similar to AoE3's. Hence, at its core, which is the gameplay and nothing else, the game is just like any other AoE.

deep down under 10 layers of shit the game is a very enjoyable pvp RTS. it's a bad game in every other aspect, there's no denying it but the mechanics aren't bad at all.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but the game looks like a spin-off directed at a new audience, rather than a new Age of Empires. :S

the graphics have nothing to do with the gameplay. nothing. if aoe3 had the cartoonish graphics aoeo does or vice versa, the game would still play the same as the way units work with and against each other would be the same. same for economic management. the target audience isn't something that defines the core part of the game. who plays the game is a good indicator of what the core of the game is. blizzard never made broodwar with the actual intent of it being the center of a multi-million dollar korean esports scene. people who have competitively played RTS (mainly the aoe series) are giving this a go because the game plays in a way that most aoe games play.

aoeo is arguably an age of empires game ONLY at the core. the rest has almost nothing to do with it. be it graphics, questing or payment methods or target audience.

and i'm afraid that you had to pay to be able to play with your friends for aoe3, aoc, aoT, aoe1, etc, etc. the free to play version is nothing but an extremely well developed demo.

But they can certainly do a lot to enhance/deteriorate a playing experience. AoE 3 would've sucked if your units were one-dimensional illustrations. (That means lines)

You know that's not what I meant. And the makers of the game keep saying that this is a free-to-play game, not a demo.
