The game is fundamentally different. Different gameplay and graphics or not, this is not Age of Empires.
how so? questing and strange payment aside, the game resembles aoc much more than aoe3 ever did. I'd say it's something of a mix of the two, leaning towards aoc in terms of macro, which is quite difficult.
I'm not talking about the RTS gameplay. The game at its core is some sort of MMO RTS hybrid. That's not AoE.

http://pc.ign.com/articles/114/1145676p1.html
I AM talking about the game play and that's the most important thing to consider when talking about a game. The core of the game, as you say, is how the game works when you're actually playing it, not in the game menus. When you do actually quest, it's pretty much like the single player campaigns. When you do actually play against other people it's like most of the other AoE games I've tried.

Yes there is gear and leveling and things that resemble MMO. And while it is unfortunate that you have to do silly quests to play competitively online, the game itself plays exactly how an AoE should play. It's sort of a AoC/AoT/Aoe3 hybrid when you actually play the game. The macro is difficult and is akin to that of AoC's, the micro is probably more similar to AoE3's. Hence, at its core, which is the gameplay and nothing else, the game is just like any other AoE.
The core isn't the gameplay. The gameplay (and the graphics, and sound, etc.) is an aspect of the game. The core is the heart and essence of the game. And everybody, from the makers of the game to the critics to the players, admits the game is a departure from the series in that it's a 'MMORTS'. There are also some bizarre things going on here, like how you have to pay to be able to play with your friends.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but the game looks like a spin-off directed at a new audience, rather than a new Age of Empires. :S
the graphics have nothing to do with the gameplay. nothing. if aoe3 had the cartoonish graphics aoeo does or vice versa, the game would still play the same as the way units work with and against each other would be the same. same for economic management. the target audience isn't something that defines the core part of the game. who plays the game is a good indicator of what the core of the game is. blizzard never made broodwar with the actual intent of it being the center of a multi-million dollar korean esports scene. people who have competitively played RTS (mainly the aoe series) are giving this a go because the game plays in a way that most aoe games play.

aoeo is arguably an age of empires game ONLY at the core. the rest has almost nothing to do with it. be it graphics, questing or payment methods or target audience.

and i'm afraid that you had to pay to be able to play with your friends for aoe3, aoc, aoT, aoe1, etc, etc. the free to play version is nothing but an extremely well developed demo.
I didn't say graphics are part of the gameplay. I said that gameplay, graphics, sound, etc. are aspects of a game, not its core. I also didn't say the target audience is the core of the game. The core of a game is its type. AoEO is a MMORTS. The Age of series isn't a MMO series.
i wouldn't say it's in its core an MMORTS. the PvE and leveling aspect is only at the very surface of the game, far from its core. after a couple days full time playing you're out of the leveling and pve aspect and from there the core of the game and whatever it is is oldschool age of empires. i at first was sceptic about their claims that there was still the old aoe core in the gameplay but i have to say they did keep to their word. in any RTS, the core is the very basics of the gameplay which are the mechanics, and they are good. not flawless, but totally acceptable.

So I'm level 9. I played a 2v2 pvp with a mate by clicking find a game at the same time. We pwned. Pretty gay how you can't officially play with mates if you don't pay the $20 though. And the quests wouldn't be so bad if they like, actually followed a story line? Like srsly they could've at least made it campaign like or something. Instead you just do random shit that isn't very enjoyable.

You know that's not what I meant. And the makers of the game keep saying that this is a free-to-play game, not a demo.

That's the thing though. The game IS free to play. I've played with sam and gs and bart and other random people with the free version. I've played the game a lot and had some fun with the free version. The thing is that you need to pay to be able to get to the best part of the game, which is level 40 pvp. That's how it should be, there's no reason an age of empires game should be free anyway. granted there are issues like only one civ at a time and all, but it remains true to its values, believe it or not. as gs said, pve (what does teh e stand for anyway?) is only a tiny part of what the game truly offers.

So it's basically just a grinding endeavour up to level 40; ie the optimum playing experience?

I always buy games. It's my way of showing support to the people who developed them. If I really think a game is top-notch I might even shell out a few bucks for DLC just as a way of saying "thanks". So many games get half-assed these days so to see developers who make really good work deserves a reward.

I didn't really mean he should've pirated it; I was just astonished at having discovered him to have purchased a game which he does not altogether esteem.

Nah, I know. I'm just saying. When you live in a world where not everyone's paying for stuff, you've got to have at least a few people who are willing to pay to say "Thanks for making this, because I totally have no idea how to do something like that."

So I only have 4 storage slots open because the rest of them are filled with locked items. I'd sell them but I don't know if I want to buy the game yet sooooo yea what a pos system. I have to keep selling recipes and stuff because otherwise I can't do quests because my inventory is full. :S

Um yea that's what my inventory looks like, except there's no empty slots.
I don't want to buy greek because what if I want to play egyptians? Or the new civs? $20 turns into $40, then $60, then $80, just for FOUR civs that i have to play all the fucking quests for.

As you guys may have heard, Age of empires online comes out tomorrow.

Now, there are lots of problems with the game, but there is a possibility of downloading a free portion of the game to try it out before paying. It doesn't hurt doing so and if you guys do it, maybe we can play together. Are you gonna give it a shot? There's lots of silly questing but the game itself is pretty nice

gs what level u at
high

in other words the same as i was 3 days ago. i won't level for a while uni introduction i'll be drunk/stoned more than not the next week and a half.
Je bent toch geen Lullo meer? Aren't you going to second year? Or does Nijmegen has an introduction every year? Or are you going to accomplish the newbs? (iluvweed)

In your shoes I'd get rid of all the advisors (and buy them if you ever go premium). I also notice that you have two sets of villager tools. Get rid of the one with lesser stats since you're not going to use it anyway. Similarly I think you have two or three swords, imo you should only keep the best one and hope that later you'll find a better sword.

That's how I keep a few slots open. I sell almost everything so as to get moneh. :D
