It's just people expect learning a ubiquitous, universal language like English to be as easy as a language they rarely use, and when reality knocks, they think one language is harder than the other.

Dutch and English are a lot alike. Superficially they're different but that's what discourages Anglophones from learning it. That and Dutch isn't spoken by enough people to really justify taking the time to learn it. It's not like Spanish or French where there's a lot of people who speak it, including in a relatively close proximity to our own country. How many people live in the Netherlands, and how many Dutch speakers are there on this side of the world?
