Some people speculate that, as a result of time dilation, time no longer progresses at such a speed. |

Another scientific theory possibly proven utterly wrong. Looks like scientists aren't infallible after all. ![]() EDT: Let me add an emoticon at the end of that so as not to sound argumentative.

You're right dragon, scientists aren't infallible; it's not as though anybody said they were. The scientific principles that exist are as alterable as our knowledge of science; if that knowledge happens to change, so do the principles. |

Some people act as if scientists are infallible though, which is ironically unscientific. |

We'll probably see within the next week. It probably is just a matter of error in calculation, though. |

Lol that's like painting an AK47 pink and saying "I'm threatening your life with this but I hope that this delicate color will make sure there are no hard feelings between us". Obviously science isn't infallible. Who ever pretended it was? |

Do "the theory of evolution is a fact" and "there's a scientific consensus about AGW and the science is settled" ring a bell? But whatever, I don't want to start another argument.

read the article right b4 i got on here. awsome!!! i hope the calculations were right. think about what that would do for space travel if there is no speed limit!!! worm holes not a necesity anymore :) |

ye just because it's the fastest we ever saw doesn't mean it's the fastest possible. about the whole time travel bs: light =/= time so i don't see how someone would be able to travel in time by going faster than light? sure, if someone was viewing you from a distance and you'd move away from them faster than the speed of light they would see it as you teleporting, but i don't see what time has to do with anything. what am i missing? the inexplicable mistake people are making is calling these scientific facts certainties. they aren't, we knew that already because at least one of them had to be broken to explain the way atoms work. scientific facts are what we observed and logically concluded with our minds. how incredibly closed minded of people to think that we could ever come to objective truths with a mind as subjective as our own. |

iirc traveling faster than light = catching up with light beams that carry images from the past or something like that so you can view the past. let me look for the video im talking about |

much like time nearly stops the closer you get to a black hole time goes slower the closer you get to the speed of light. we will see how the rest of the experiment goes but it has been calculated that time should nearly stop for the one going the speed of light, i believe they actually age slower. i think i read somewhere that if one were to reach the speed of light for even a fraction of a second, by the time he stopped everyone he knew would be dead and one would have aged for only that fraction of a second he went the speed of light for. correct me if I'm wrong hyper but i am going to go look for some .articles in the mean time... |

http://helios.gsfc.nasa.gov/qa_gp_sl.html#time maybe its the other way around, you wouold be dead in what the observer saw of a fraction of a second.... i am half asleep and will read that in more depth later but either way, speed does affect how fast or slow time goes for you, as does gravity... like i said, will look up more tomorrow after work and on the page, scroll down and click on the Time Near the Speed of Light tab and it will take you straight to the equation. |

:O @gs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_dilation @dragon: Galen was always correct and there was no need to inquire further into the human anatomy. The ancient greeks discovered everything there was to know about health and medicine; our duty should only have been to refine the practice. At least, that's what people used to think Edited by The_Fry_Cook_of_Doom, Sep 24 2011, 02:56 AM.

Aren't we already traveling super fast away from the point big bang? That's what I don't get. How can you not be moving if the universe is expanding? |

It's their past, but it's our present. Also, for time dilation, 'time goes slower for you if you move faster' is a bit misleading. Time in your reference frame is the same, but from the reference frame of a slower observer time in your reference frame is slower. From your reference frame the time in slower references is faster. Hence the phrase "it's all relative". |

I'd love for this to be genuine. Then I'd go in physics class and for every equation depending on c (ie almost all of them) I'd say "nope, not gonna learn this false shit". Then get up dramatically and leave the class. :D |
