CHEERIO!

This is not a gs fanclub thread unfortunately, however I will make it one if you can help me out here bro. Remember how I was trying to figure out why the internet back home wasn't working? Well I'm getting more sick and tired of that shit every time I think of it. I really want to solve this fucking problem once and for all. I believe you set up these kind of networks professionally so ... I wanna hear your expert opinion. SO! As you know, the ethernet of my house doesn't work for every computer in the house. Put simply, if I take my desktop and connect to the the router downstairs via cables running through our house's walls, I get a perfectly normal internet connection. I can do this in any room on the house. Now, if I attempt to do the same thing with any of our laptops, or my dad's new HTPC, it doesn't work. If these computers are plugged directly into the router without going through the calbes in the wall, they all function perfectly well. If they're in any other room, say my bedroom, these computers won't work. So in summary, my PC (and my old PC that I'd been using for years btw) is able to connect via ethernet cables running through the walls in any room. That's 2 PCs that work. All the other PCs do not function if using wall plugs, yet all of them work perfectly fine if plugged into the router directly. There is one exception, my laptop works in my sister's room, which is physically close to the room where the router is located... The way the computer "doesn't work" is the following. When the computer is plugged into the wall socked (which leads to the router), you see lights slowly flashing on the corresponding plug on the back of the router. The computer itself either doesn't detect a signal or it's "limited connectivity". The question is why? I have tried many, many things, including but not limited to: -Reinstalling every network drivers on the computers that don't work. -Using different ethernet cables, both between the computer and wall plug, and the router and wall plug (the router is right next to a sort of panel with all the ethernet connections of every room). -Tweaking with network configurations (adapter settings > properties > configure > advanced). -Buying a USB/ethernet adapter and trying to see if that works (it didn't, we returned the cable np). -Trying to manually set up network with static IPs and whatnot. I believe this is a DHCP problem, however I can't fathom how to fix it. Two solutions I haven't tried yet (because it costs money) are: -Getting a network card and seeing if that works. Would only work for the HTPC though and not the laptops. -Looking into getting a "stronger" router. Not sure how that would play out though. -Getting something to "amplifiy" the signal. Not sure how that would play out either. There HAS to be a solution and I KNOW the cabling in the walls is fine since we have 2 PCs which work in 2 different rooms, I haven't tested to be 100% sure but I'm 99% sure that they work in every room. Also something I noticed is that both the PCs that work have quad core CPUs which both have good reputations, i5 4670 and Q6600, whereas I think every other computer has only dual core CPUs. One laptop has a Pentium (think it's Haswell), the HTPC has a A4-5600k and my laptop has an Intel Core 2 duo. Don't think it matters but maybe it is worth pointing out that both PCs that work have nice beefy processors. Sorry for wall of text |

Huh?
|
So it's when you plug the laptop or the HTPC into the Ethernet cables that run round your house into your rooms, but not when you use a separate Ethernet cable and connect it into the router? It's not a WiFi Problem, because your not using that, Correct? How are the Ethernet cables that run round your house through the walls connected to the router, or are they even connected to the router? |

no it's not that at all. it's like this: router > cable > panel with plugs for every room > cable in house's wall > plug > cable > computer it's not wifi problem since this is all ethernet, wifi works fine when my computer is at the end of the chain i just posted, everything works fine. my old desktop also works. anything else, those being laptops or HTPC, does not. |

That goes along with what ichi says, things are happening just really damn slow. Which I believe is the case, I'm 100% sure the cables are fine, the house (and the cables) is like 1.5 years old. Also when I plug my computer in my parent's room for example, everything works. When it's the HTPC, it doesn't work, however you do get blinking lights in the router downstairs which is different than if the router had nothing plugged at all. It's the PCs that are fucking up, through pure logic, but I don't understand why. |
