CHEERIO!

On the 26th of July, my parents scolded me for drinking my apéritif (I'm sure you all know what that is) in one go. "You'll have trouble with alcohol", they said. "It's not reasonable to do such things", I was told. In protest, I swore to my parents that I would not drink alcohol for 5 months. Which is what I did. There were two exceptions, two birthdays which required me to drink champagne. None other than that. Today, the 29th of December, I had a little too much drink. I had forgotten the limits of what was reasonable and what was not. I must admit, as I am typing this (on my MX Brown switch keyboard, which for some reason, I feel it is important to tell you all), I have had too much to drink. My body has forgotten how to tolerate alcohol. I must also admit, however, that this overdose was completely purposeful. I felt the need to bring back my tolerance to what it once was. Why? I cannot fathom. In such circumstances, it seems only natural that I should come back to these forums and write. Why? Again, I do not know. Yet, there is something about this website that makes me want to open such a (bizarre) topic. It's not love. I think it's more of a strange mix of respect, comaraderie and friendship. How long have we frequented these boards? How long have we discussed many important topics to death? How long have we shared funny and interesting pictures, videos and jokes? It seems to me that these forums have gone beyond a simple "website". This sounds unbelievably corny (which, coming from a drunken Frenchmen, is saying something), but I feel that we're really good friends here. It may not show on a day to day basis, but it's there. This is because what we share can't be seen in the span of twenty-four hours; it's something that is tangible over a longer period of time. Either way, to all of you, whether you're reading this now or you have posted in the past, I wish you a very happy New Year. PS: Why the hell is my grammar so immaculate, even drunk? The answer is the backspace key and google. |

at meaux, which is close to paris but thankfully not too close. points of interest at lannion guingamp huh? not much that I can think of, tbh. lannion is coastal and guingamp isn't, so if you fancy seeing the ocean you can head there. too cold to go swimming though. i know lannion rather well. there's a big round sphere building there that i think is one of those.. whatcha call 'em.. virtual night sky things. planetarium? idk bro. it seems kind of far from the city itself though. otherwise they're typical Breton cities, which in itself is charming, imo. lannion is probably more interesting than guingamp. |

no.... I did light beers in high school. Now about as light as I go is Budweizer and miller straight, but have strayed from them also. I now drink Sam Adams and Guinness almost exclusively. |

You are correct. Especially the heavier darker beers (non light beers). As I stated, I don't drink light beer anymore, it is disgusting. Makes me want to gag. I like the heavier darker beers based off of German recipes. The big difference is we refrigerate ours and I believe Germans don't? correct me if I am wrong please. It is due to shelf life/transportation reasons from way back when it took a longer amount of time to ship something. Moving it across Germany and moving it across America was two completely different things. To move it across america, it would usually spoil prior to getting to its destination (before the invention of sterile containers/preservatives to keep the bacteria growth to a minimum). So they combated spoiled beer by refrigeration. Over time, people in america became accustomed to it and I personally enjoy the flavor of cold beer over a warm beer. If I had been raised in a different country, my pallet would have developed differently. |

i'm not too sure about most of that. as far as the transportation thing, i think you might've been confused with the history of the lager/ale; the difference being that one was fermented top deck, the other bottom deck (as they would ferment during the merchant voyage), and the temperature distinguishing the one from the other. after that, i don't really see german beers as traditionally being dark. stouts and porters (guinness is an example of a stout) are products of the british isles, and the mad dark, heavy, high-degree belgian beers are, well, belgian. german beers, at least for me, are lighter, though wheat-heavy, summer-type beers the issue with the american beer is more corporate; the huge companies that want to maximize profits just delude the hell out of their products, which is why coors/icehouse/bud are so gross. it's like a mcdonalds hamburger vs. some dope artisan hamburger at a german deli. that being said, america is fucking huge, we both can appreciate that. there are plenty of cities that are overflowing with awesome microbreweries; one of those cities being my hometown, san diego. if you have a bevmo near you, check out some of the shit from san diego! anything from stone brewery, ironfist, ballast point, or green flash for some examples. i think stone brewery is the most well-known. also there's a brewery from up-state new york called ommegang which offers some insane belgian-styles (meaning they even use the belgian yeast strains which are goddamn excellent) or look in your own city for some microbrews. shit's always better |

ops... just did some research and sorath is correct. I was wrong :p. Sorath, have you heard of the boulevard brewery in Kansas City, Missouri? I did a tour/beer tasting and it was marvelous. I don't remember the names as the beer tasting was all you can drink but it was great! started off with an IPA beer that wasn't too bad and moved on to lagers and ales. Started off lighter colored beers and got darker and heavier as the tour went on. They were great! They weren't no pussy ass 6.2 beers either, their lightest beer was 8.0 and got up to 12.5 on some of the really heavy stuff. Tasted fantastic. There was actually only one I wasn't fond of but even it was decent compared to most.

Does anyone like beer the first time they taste it? I didn't. Though I kept drinking because I knew that it's one of those things you don't like at first and then grow accustomed to. Then you start enjoying it. Coffee was the same for me. |

No, I hated beer the first time I tried it. Absolutly hated it. Now there is almost nothing better than cracking open a beer to relax. I used to hate black coffee also. I used to drink coffee with my milk and sugar as some called it. Then I started eating oven roasted chocolate covered coffee beans. They were OK. Not my favorite but OK to munch on. I got addicted to them. Ate them ALL the fucking time. Then one day I thought I would take a sip of black coffee with no extra. I haven't put sugar, cream, milk, or anything else in my coffee since. |

the lightest beer offered by the brewery was 8 degrees? holy shit dude, that's some bold brewery! haven't heard of them, until now, haha! i don't think i'll find some of their products over here in france though did you not like their IPA? IPAs are plenty popular in the states, and not at all in europe, which sucks, as i love me a good IPA in the afternoon. treasure that shit, man. anyone who thinks that the states don't offer any decent (excellent, world class) beers is a fool |

No. I liked it. It wasn't to bad. Wasn't GREAT but it was still pretty danm good. Their weakest isn't an 8, that was the weakest featured beer on the tour. They have several in the 4-7 range. The lower content beers were available on the tour but not the tour "featured" beers. I stuck with the featured ones which were more boozy. The really strong stuff though was experimental batches only currently available on the tour. I looked and none of the ones on the portfolio are that one. They said taste testing has went good though and they hope to mass manufacture it in the next couple of years. That was the only one in the 12% range though at 12.5%. There is the free tour and then there is the "unfiltered tour" which is not free with the experimental beer tasting and more thorough. My work paid for the tour to see how other sites operate. Even though it is beer and I am pharma, it is amazing how similar a lot of the equipment and processes can be to our compounding process. http://www.boulevard.com/beers/about-our-beers/ The double wide IPA was the IPA one I talked about, The Tank 7 farmhouse ale was really good, but the dark truth stout was by far my favorite. That could be because I was almost tanked by that point but hey :) My wife isn't a big beer drinker so she got a full glass, sipped it until I had downed mine, and then switched glasses. We sampled a total of 5 different beers. I had at least 2 of each beer (minus the little bit my wife sipped) and 3 glasses of the double wide IPA and the truth stout. Don't make fun of me, I am kind of a lightweight. I am glad I didn't have to drive home because by the end of the tour i was feeling pretty good, but then again so was everyone else minus a few of the spouses that did the same thing my wife and I did. I am trying to find a local winery to do the same thing for her as her drink of choice is wine. |
