it wasn't until i read this thread http://www.reddit.com/r/LifeProTips/comments/1u6e97/lpt_new_years_resolution_to_learn_programming/

it reminded me of how i've always wanted to learn c++ so i started again today. unfortunately c++ is not included in that pleb harvard course despite it clearly being the master race programming language (plus the harvard nubs pay attention to scrub languages like html/javascript which i don't care about) so i looked for recommended websites and landed on learncpp.com. looks pretty good.

learned some basic stuff as a hobby back in high school from a book i got as a present which was fun, and the first half year of my studies taught me some more so i'm not a total beginner, but i'll probably get bored of it relatively soon because i lack a clear goal. also because hearthstone is too addicting

What would be the point of a Christmas thread considering most on these forums are Athiest or at the very least god doubters?

Come on ryker, you live in the heart of America. You of all people should be aware of how Christmas has almost entirely lost its religious associations, and become more of a celebration of Western culture and consumerism than the birth of the Christ.

I guess I was wrong. Sorry, everyone in my household except me is devout Christians. My mother in law/wife are continually reminding the kids why we celebrate Christmas. I just keep my mouth shut and let it go. I guess since I am surrounded by hypocritical christian nonsense (I live in a small town of which most are very religious) I forget that most of the world celebrates it to get presents as opposed to the christian beliefs.

So what does everyone think about Buddhism?

They're the guys who think that people should live life on a daily basis. I think out of all religions it's easily the nicest one, the most chill. I think my cousin is a Buddist.

I think unicorns have a higher chance of existing than gods do. I mean, if a mare fell into the ocean and a narwhal raped it, then the mare might just give birth to a unicorn.

Christmas is given observance in Iran?

On Buddhism, basically the idea is that to exist is to suffer, suffering is caused by desires and ignorance of the true nature of things, suffering can be eliminated by following certain principles called the Eight Fold Path. Of course like most Christians don't act like Jesus, the same can be said for Buddhists like the ones in Burma that are beating and killing Muslims. :/ Reincarnation can be used to justify killing.

Darn, I was really looking for a religion. Well, not a religion really, more of a thought. Obviously, Buddhism isn't what I thought it was. Maybe someone can help me identify one that reflects what I am looking for?

I am looking for something that does NOT worship, look to, idolize anyone, or greater deity. I am looking for something that looks at ones self for reflection and self improvement through things such as meditation, self evaluation, or gatherings. Like I said, I am not looking for a "church" type atmosphere, that idolizes a god or anything. I don't know, does anyone have any inkling what I am trying to say? I am a came out atheist to everyone I know now. That being said, I used to be a very devout Christian. I miss the sense of religion that I used to have. I am looking to replace it with something that focuses on me and self improvement through reflection and meditation rather than something that gives you a figure (jesus, God, Alah, etc) to strive to be like....

Taoism?

I'm not familiar with it but I think it doesn't have a deity and focuses on living life peacefully.

Sounds like a really boring religion tbh.

why do you need to label yourself ryker? try to get to the bottom of that. people tend to have the urge to belong somewhere and i can imagine you would especially since you're surrounded by people who all practice the same religion. but finding a religion to label yourself isn't the answer, you gotta fight the urge and make your own "religion" based on how you personally feel about things.

if you really have to, go with buddhism. it's the best out of the bunch by a mile. it's not all nice and dandy obviously but its basic principles are quite timeless. also whatever you do, don't join a cult.

Thanks for the info goodspeed/ichi. I will look into them.

I have no intentions of labeling myself/joining (especially a cult). I want more to do research so I can pick out the points I like and do my own thing but it is best to have a start/something to go from so i am not starting from scratch. I don't believe in higher powers so I don't want anything that requires that. Just something that focuses on the "self" and improvement of the self.
